County Policy for Promotion
County Policy for Placement
- The student has had 2 previous retentions
- The student's physical and/or social maturity is such that retention would be detrimental for that student, or other students.
- For emotional reasons, the student would be unable to benefit from retention
- The student is a Limited English Proficiency student, and it has been determined that the lack of achievement is related to a deficiency in English language skills, not a lack of academic achievement.
- For 8th grade, placement to the next grade must be the result of a unanimous decision by the Placement Committee. For students with disabilities the IEP committee will be the Placement Committee.
- Students placed to the next grade level shall be referred to the POI team for ongoing monitoring.
Who is the Placement Committee?
LMS Expectations Regarding Placed or Retained Students
For students that the Pod feels will benefit from retention the following needs to occur:
- Parents should be contacted and informed during quarter 3 of the possibility.
- Parent contact and conversation should continue through quarter 4.
- During the last 2 weeks of school a retention meeting should occur. This is an in-person meeting with the student, parent/guardian, teachers, and AP.
- If student is on POI, the POI coordinator must be informed.
- If student is not on POI they must be added to the POI.
- A Candidate Placement/Retention Form should be filled out and given to the 8th grade AP. (See link below)
- The student's name should be listed in the Placement/Retention List. (See link below)
- Note: The decision must be unanimous, therefore if the parent disagrees we cannot move forward.
For students that will be placed into 9th grade the following needs to occur:
- Parents should be contacted and informed during quarters 3 or 4. If during quarter 4 this conversation should begin early into the quarter. These conversations may be via the phone. If the parent is on board no in-person meeting is required.
- If the parent disagrees with placement a retention meeting must be scheduled.
- A Candidate Placement/Retention Form should be filled out and given to AP. (See link below)
- The student's name should be listed in the Placement/Retention List. (See link below)
Any student that the teachers feel could go either way should follow the retention process, including the in-person meeting.
ANY student who is Placed or Retained must be listed in the Placement/Retention List. The form is located below. The form should be turned into the 8th grade AP during post planning. This form is filled out by each homeroom teacher. If all students are promoted, as in they meet all requirements, then the HR teacher will write ALL PROMOTED across the form and turn it into the 8th grade AP.
Lastly, no parent or guardian should be surprised to see PLACED or RETAINED on their student's report card at the end of the year.
