North Middle High School Monthly
March 2020
Principal's Message
Hello, and Happy March! I cannot believe that we are 8 months within the school year. We have a full plate of items ahead and still we are excited about the journey. Diligent is a word that we will be talking a lot about at North this month. Diligent is a characteristic that allows one to continue to persevere through adversity. In any organization, there may be days where it can become challenging, but when diligence is exerted, the sky is the limit. The word diligence exerts grit. The grit to keep moving. The grit to never give up. My favorite NFL team, the Carolina Panthers, uses the phrase of “keep pounding.” This demonstrates diligence no matter what. We have to put in the consistency to keep pounding and to illustrate grit. We have to be energetic to what we do each day. This applies to me as a school leader, but also to students, parents, faculty, and staff.
Our faculty and staff are reading The Power of a Positive Team. Within this book, it talks about many things but while thinking about diligence, one particular part that comes to mind is about our why. It is quoted in the book that “When you know your why and you know the way, you won’t let obstacles get in the way” (Gordon, 2018). This allows us to keep pushing towards a shared vision and will fuel us towards a collective journey. Let’s be diligent in the month of March and beyond in order to successfully reach our goals!

NMHS Celebrates Read Across America
In celebration of Read Across America, teachers shared Dr. Seuss books, and students participated in a variety of subject-based activities. Dr. Gadson's eighth grade science classes made oobleck from cornstarch, water and food coloring. In Dr. Seuss' book Bartholomew and the Oobleck, oobleck is a "gooey green substance, fell from the sky and wreaked havoc in the kingdom." In Mrs. Carter's 6th and 7th grade classes, they listened to Justin Bieber read The Cat in the Hat and then using geometry and measurement skills, students made Cat in the Hat faces with red and white hats, triangle ears, and rectangle whiskers. They also identified the area of the shapes. In addition, Mrs. Aiken's art classes used coffee filters and markers to create tie dye flowers after reading The Lorax.

7 Steps for Success Book Review
College is not like high school, and the services and accommodations for students with disabilities are different. Following a step-by-step guide will help students navigate the difficult transition from high school to college and help them to discover the social, personal, and study skills needed by successful college students.
In her book, 7 Steps for Success: High School to College Transition Strategies for Students with Disabilities, Elizabeth C. Hamblet outlines 7 steps to empower students to pursue success. The seven steps are:
Step 1 – Establish a foundation: Learn about disability law and research on preparing for success at college.
Step 2 – Know student rights and responsibilities
Step 3 – Develop essential personal skills
Step 4 – Develop college survival skills
Step 5 – Understand college accommodations
Step 6 – Find the right college
Step 7 – Put it all together – documentation and the transition portfolio
