How can you use social networks safely and responsibly?
You have to be very very careful with what you post and who you have accepted as a friend or a follower. You should also be careful with who you text or talk with on these social networks. Also you should be aware that once a picture or a piece of information or anything is posted on whichever social network site it stays there forever, even if you delete you never know what people might have done with it.
PIN numbers
A PIN number (also known s Personal Identification Number) is a 4-digit number combination known only to you, and allows you to access your account information using our Automated Telephone Banking system. We all know the dangers. The smartphone is the portal to online shopping, our bank accounts and all manner of social network profiling. For many, it is our digital identity.Make sure it has a lock code and never share it with anyone.
Biometric Scanners
Thanks to the incredibly good fingerprint reader on the iPhone, millions of people have become accustomed to the everyday use of biometric security: the use of a unique biological characteristic as a security pass. Fingerprints are the biometrics we’re getting used to, but there are other forms of biometrics, like iris scans, voiceprints, heartbeats, and even gait detection (how you walk). Biometrics are incredibly convenient and they can also be very secure. But they also have really big issues that can bite users if they are not careful. They will be hacked. You cannot really rely on them. Security experts recommend using passwords as the first line of security, and using biometrics as an additional factor in security.
Encryption
Your information is kept away from prying eyes thanks to cryptographic algorithms, which scramble the message so no-one else can read it but its intended recipient. Keeping your personal data safe doesn't have to be difficult—as long as you keep the sensitive stuff encrypted and under your control. The information is transformed into code using an algorithm by use of a code that prevents it from being understood by anyone who is not authorised to read it. Encryption and decryption takes place using software that may be loaded on the computer where the files reside or emails are sent from, and opened from, or by the encryption key accompanying the data itself. As a general rule the more bits used for the encryption the stronger it will be. Care should be taken to choose your encryption software according to your specific needs and level of risk.
What should you avoid doing?
Social networks let you post all kinds of information. The more information you put online the more people can find out about you. Some people might use this to bully you or contact you and lie about being into the same things as you. So don’t post any private information, don’t tell anyone where you live, your phone number or any other personal piece of information to strangers. Some people set up fake profiles on social networks. They even pretend to be girls or boys your age when actually they’re much older. It can be really hard to tell the difference, so be careful with who you have shared contact with. Just as social networks can be used to share lots of information about yourself and stay in touch with all your friends, there are some people that can also use these things to share nasty things, embarrassing pictures, horrible comments, fake profiles and say nasty things to people. So if any random person starts texting you do not reply and block him immediately.
