Kindergarten
This month in Kindergarten will be working on identifying, describing, classifying and composing shapes. We will also name, count, join and break apart numbers from 1-10
In Science we will observe, compare and record changes in daily and seasonal weather and discuss how changes in weather affect people
In Reading and Letterland, we will read and write the final letters of the alphabet as well as digraphs and trigraphs and use them Blend CVC words. We will ask and answer questions about digital read alouds and use pictures, letters and words to write how to and all about books.
1st Grade
During Science, students will be analyzing rocks and minerals found on Earth's surface.
During Social Studies, students will be determining the differences between wants and needs.
During ELA, students will be investigating various features and characteristics of nonfiction texts, as well as creating their own informational texts. During Letterland, students will be utilizing long vowel patterns.
During Math, students will be exploring the meaning of equality.
2nd Grade
In Math, students will build on their understanding of place value by recognizing that the three digits of a three-digit number represent amounts of hundreds, tens, and ones, and use this knowledge to read, write, and compare numbers.
In EL, students will continue to build on their literacy and science skills as they engage in a study of fossils and paleontology through various informational texts.
In Social Studies, students will engage in an Economics unit to understand the basic concepts of the economy such as producers and consumers, wants and needs, supply and demand, earning and saving.
3rd Grade
In Math, we are learning about the attributes of quadrilaterals and using that knowledge to help us understand area and perimeter.
In Science, we will be focusing on States of Matter.
In Social Studies we will learn about individuals and events in History that impacted our community. We will also be learning about the Civil Rights Movement and Women's Suffrage Movement.
4th Grade
In reading, we will become experts on animals and their methods of staying safe. Acting as professional researchers, we will track down data to write a final informational text on our animal.
We will be learning about changes to North Carolina changes in social studies and the Earth's materials in science.
5th Grade
In math this month, students will continue to work on decimals, powers of 10, and measurements. Students will solve real-world problems with multi-digit whole numbers and decimal numbers, using models, drawings, or strategies based on place value. Students will work to assess the reasonableness of their answers through the use of estimation. Students will also create/plan a trip to Disney (meal plan) and solve problems related to a scenario for our STEM challenge.
In ELA this month, students will continue reading about the rainforest. We will start Module 2 Unit 2 where students will read narrative texts to determine the point of view of a narrator, determine the gist, and describe figurative language within the texts. Additionally, students will compare and contrast narrative and informational texts on the rainforest. Students will use written language to explain their understanding of rainforest texts.
5th Grade Scientists will complete the Matter and Energy Interactions unit, finishing up the water cycle. We will then complete our next unit, Relationships of Force and Motion. In this unit, we will explore how factors such as gravity, friction, and change in mass affect the motion of objects.
Art Prek-1st
PreK and Kindergarten - We have finished up with The Mitten. Next we will be doing Elmer the Elephant and then learning about Rosa Parks
1st grade - We have been learning about snowflakes and for February we will be learning about Mae Jemison - black female astronaut.
Art 2nd-3rd
2nd grade - We have been learning about Wassily Kandinsky and his abstract art with music. For Black History month we will be learning about African Masks and the design/meanings.
3rd grade - We are starting to learn about the Underground Railroad and the quilts that were used as 'messages' throughout the underground railroad.
Art 4th-5th
4th grade - We are finishing up on our unit on North Carolina lighthouses, students are now designing their own lighthouse. For Black History month we will be learning about Faith Ringgold and her 'quilt stories'.
5th grade - We are learning about 1 point and 2 point Perspective Drawing. The kids seem very engaged so far!!
