Here we go!
Grant Humanitas Magnet
Welcome to the 2020-2021 School Year!
PERSPECTIVES
Here are a few thoughts to get you started:
- It’s important to value different perspectives to foster understanding and empathy.
- Understanding the perspective of the artist helps us understand their product.
- An individual’s perspective is influenced by their upbringing, values, culture, environment, education, religion, etc.
- Understanding the harmful impact of bias and injustice on our world, historically and today, can help form one’s perspective.
You have your way. I have my way. As for the right way, the correct way, and the only way, it does not exist. —Friedrich Nietzsche
The First Week of School
The following information is the most current that we have received from the principal:
The first day of school will be August 18. The first two days of school, August 18 and 19, will focus on preparing for online learning.
Students will spend Tuesday and Wednesday morning watching orientation videos about tools and strategies for online learning success, online safety, and digital citizenship. On Tuesday and Wednesday, students need to log on to Schoology (lms.lausd.net) with their username and password and click on their advisory course to access their online lessons.
If students do not know their username/school e-mail address or need help resetting their passwords, please call the school during office hours (7:30am - 4:00pm) for assistance.
On Tuesday, August 18, I will hold 2 virtual meetings to welcome you to Grant and answer any questions you may have. The first meeting will be at 10:30am for 9th and 10th grade students. The second meeting will be at 11:30am for 11th and 12th grade students. The link to these orientations will be posted on our school’s website and is included in this e-mail. For those who are unable to attend, a video recording of the meeting will be posted on our school’s website.
On Wednesday, August 19, Advisory teachers will hold an online meet-and-greet session with their students. Students will go to their Schoology course to learn the time for this meeting.
On Thursday, August 20, a full day of online instruction begins at 9 a.m. We encourage your child to be logged in on time and ready for this exciting start to the school year.
Class schedules and additional information can be found on our school’s website (granths.org).
We continue our distribution of textbooks and Chromebooks on Friday. If you missed your designated time, we will be distributing materials on Monday afternoon, Tuesday, and throughout next week as needed.
Should you have additional questions, please contact our school office at 818 756-2701. Office hours are 7:30am – 4:00pm. Alternately, I invite you to e-mail me at rlm9245@lausd.net.
I look forward to a great school year and appreciate your support and continued partnership.

Zoom Policies for Online Learning
- Students need to log on to class at the start of class. Please arrive on time.
- Students need to stay in their Zoom classes until the teacher dismisses them.
- Students should stay muted until the teacher calls on them. Unnecessary noises from microphones are very disruptive.
- We request that students turn their cameras on so that we can see who is participating. We watch for student feedback (like heads nodding and hands raised) and we can’t get that feedback if students don’t have their cameras on.
- We understand that there may be times when students need to turn their cameras off. We will respect their privacy. We just want you to understand that our ability to give feedback is greatly diminished when cameras are turned off.
- Students should make sure that their own name is displayed when signing into Zoom so that we can keep accurate records and attendance.
- Please add a clear profile picture if possible. That way if your camera is turned off, we can still have an idea of who we are talking to.
- Student should participate in class by responding to their teachers verbally or in the chat box.
- In order to respect the privacy of all participants, students may not record or take pictures of Zoom sessions. Teachers will make sure the necessary information is posted on Schoology so you’ll be able to access it later if you missed something during the Zoom session.
- Student behavior expectations in Zoom classes are the same as in our physical classrooms. Please be kind, respectful, and polite.
