Reproducible research: statistical methods and practices (BIOS)
Description:
Basic definitions, approaches, and current issues in reproducible research; metrics for assessing reproducibility for binary, continuous, multivariate and meta-analysis data; best practices for statistical design and analysis of reproducible studies involving simple group comparisons, regression and prediction, large database analyses, bioinformatics, and unsupervised clustering; current examples drawn from literature throughout.
Course learning objectives: Students will be able to 1) Discuss different aspects and concepts of reproducible research, 2) understand and utilize different metrics and graphical procedures for reproducibility assessment, 3) Design and analyze experiments in such a way that the reproducibility of the results will be as far as possible secured, while avoiding common pitfalls that cripple reproducibility.

The Annual Hackathon for Students Who Want to Transform the Future of Health Informatics is back! Open to all of Georgia’s post-secondary students, the 2nd annual H.I.T. HACK Challenge will showcase Georgia’s post-secondary education system as a source for skilled Healthcare IT talent.
The HIT HACK HACKATHON is meant to introduce students to technologies centered around creating real solutions while learning and having fun.

International Society for Disease Surveillance Conference
The 15th Annual Conference, is expected to attract a record 400-plus attendees, will focus on the leading edge of data science and its application to health surveillance and security. The Conference is at the nexus of cross-disciplinary research geared toward broadening the vision and knowledge-base of practitioners and policy-makers worldwide.
Abstract submission is due August 26.

2017 APHA Public Health Fellowship in Government
This is the ninth year APHA is offering this fellowship, which has been described as an “amazing,” “phenomenal” and “life altering” experience by previous fellows.
Candidates must have strong public health credentials and be able to spend one year in Washington, D.C. The fellow will have the option of working in the House or Senate on legislative and policy issues such as creating healthy communities, improving health equity, addressing environmental health concerns, population health or the social determinants of health.
Training for the fellowship will begin in January 2017 so you must be able to move to the Washington, D.C., area in January. The fellowship provides a unique learning experience and demonstrates the value and need for basing policy on sound science. Throughout the year, the fellow will gain a practical knowledge of government and how the public policy process works.
All candidates must:
1. be an APHA member.
2. have a graduate degree in public health or a related discipline.
3. have at least five years’ experience as a public health professional beyond graduate or medical training.
4. be a citizen of the U.S. or its territories or have permanent residence status in the U.S.

David A. Winston Health Policy Fellowship Program
The 2017-18 DAVID A. WINSTON HEALTH POLICY FELLOWSHIP is a 12-month postgraduate experience in Washington, DC. It is a unique opportunity that provides systematic exposure to organizations, associations, and coalitions in the private sector, as well as policy development centers in Congress and the Administration.

Reporting to the Perinatal Health Epidemiologist Manager, the Epidemiologist II Perinatal Health will be responsible for epidemiologic investigations, surveillance, program evaluation and interventions with significant impact on women and perinatal health and the public health resources.
Minimum Qualifications:
Master's degree in Public Health or a closely related field from an accredited college or university AND Two years of experience performing epidemiologic work or work in a closely related field OR Bachelor's degree in any field from an accredited college or university AND Three years of experience performing epidemiologic work or work in a closely related field OR Two years at the lower level (HCP180) or position equivalent.
