2nd Grade Updates
As a reward for students being safe, respectful, and responsible, West Elementary students were treated to a sing-a-long with Princess Ariel (Katie Collins).
Second graders read a biography about Helen Keller. One partner closed his eyes, while the other partner attempted to communicate a direction for the person to follow without using words or sounds. This activity helped us to realize what great PERSISTENCE Helen Keller must have had to overcome the silence and darkness of her world and develop a way to communicate with the outside world.
7th Grade Math
The 7th grade math students in Mr. Uitermarkt and Mr. Vander Veer’s classes have been learning about percents. This unit covered various uses of percents in our lives which included discussions about markups, markdowns, coupons, sales tax, interest, and gratuity. Students recently completed a project where they had $3,000 to shop online for a required list of items to furnish an apartment. The students had to use 7 coupons to calculate various percentages off on certain items, and they had to find 7% sales tax on every item that they bought. They had to do all of this while keeping an eye on their budget to ensure that they didn’t go over. The students had fun “dreaming” of living on their own, but found some challenges in getting everything needed for the $3,000 that they were allotted.
February is Local Scholarship Application Month

National School Counseling Week
February 4th-8th is National School Counseling Week. Knoxville's school counselors provide academic, career, and personal/social services to every student in the district. Our district counselors are Doug Hatch, Carolyn Jones, Deb Ellerman, Corrie Sass, Traci Lee, and Ruthann Burkman.
"School counselors work with all students to remove barriers to learning by addressing students’ academic concerns, career awareness in post-secondary options and social/emotional skills,” said Kwok-Sze Wong, Ed.D., ASCA executive director. “Comprehensive school counseling programs help to increase student achievement and provide a much-needed resource for students, parents, teachers and administrators. School counselors are integral to student success."
Please be sure to thank your school counselor this week!

Transportation News
The Knoxville CSD Transportation Department strives to keep our students safe. In an effort to continue to do so all route buses are now equipped with cameras to monitor violators of the Bus Stop Signal Arm. What does this mean for you as a motorist? As stated in March 2012, Iowa Govenor Terry Branstad signed into law the “Keep Aware Driving — Youth Need School Safety Act,” also known as “Kadyn’s Law.” Kadyn Halverson was just seven years old when she was struck and killed by a motorist while attempting to cross the road to board a school bus. Kadyn’s Law includes several provisions aimed at reducing school bus-related injuries and fatalities: expanded school bus safety education; a school bus safety study; and increased penalties for failure to obey school bus warning lights and stop signal arms. Failure to obey warning lights may result in at least a $250-$1,875 ticket depending on the severity of the offense.
Here is a refresher for what is required stopping for school buses:
When traveling on a two-or-three lane road ~
Approaching the bus from the rear: When you see flashing red or amber warning lights, you are not permitted to pass the school bus and should be prepared to stop. Stop behind the school bus when the school bus stops and the stop arm is extended. Stop no closer than 15 feet from the rear of the bus, and remain stopped until the stop arm is retracted and school bus starts moving again. Proceed with caution
Meeting the bus from the front: When you see amber warning lights flashing you must slow your vehicle to no more than 20 mph and be prepared to stop. Stop in front of the school bus when the school bus stops and its stop arm is extended. Remain stopped until the stop arm is retracted. Proceed with caution.
Contact your local law enforcement if you have any questions.
HELP KEEP OUR STUDENTS SAFE!
Hard Surface Routes
With winter weather upon us and road conditions changing, we may require our route buses to run “HARD SURFACE” only. Here is the link, Hard Surface Routes, to see where your student would be picked up. It will be communicated over local radio and the Iowa School Alerts.

Attention Parents of 6th Grade and 11th Grade Students!
There are immunization updates required for students when they enter 7th grade and become seniors. Now is the time to think about getting the updates. There is no grace period so: Up-to-date immunization records (or a valid medical or religious exemption) must be turned in before the first day of school in the fall so your student can be in school.
- Entering 7th grade: in addition to the Tdap requirement already in place for 7th graders, there is a requirement for 1 dose of Meningococcal vaccine on or after 10 years of age and grade 7 if born after September 15, 2004.
- Entering 12th grade: the requirement is for TWO doses of Meningococcal vaccine for those entering 12th grade if born after September 15, 1999 OR 1 dose if received when the student is 16 years of age or older.
Immunization records can be turned in at the school office or faxed to the Knoxville Middle School: 641-842-5754 OR Knoxville High School: 641-842-2066. Forms can also be emailed to the school nurse at angie.mitchell@kcsd.k12.ia.us. Please contact the nurse with any questions.
