Hammurabi's Code-Was it Just?

By Jack Miller

The reasoning

I think that Hammurabi's Code was unfair in that time period for many reasons. Some laws were cruel, such as Law 195, which states that if a son has struck his father, his hand shall be cut off. Another example is Law 196, which states that if a man has knocked out the eye of a free man, they shall knock his eye out. Yet Law 199 states that if a man has knocked out the eye of a slave, he shall pay half the slaves value to the slaves owner. That is unfair, that just becuase of the victim's social class, the punishment is different. Overall, I think Hammurabi's Code was unfair for that time period.
