FOOD SERVICE….Did you know…………
Did you know that physical activity and nutrition work together for better health? Regular physical activity can produce long term health benefits. People of all ages, shapes, sizes, and abilities can benefit from being physically active. The more physical activity you do, the greater the health benefits. Children and adolescents should do 60 minutes or more of physical activity each day. Most of the 60 minutes should be either moderate- or vigorous intensity aerobic physical activity. For more information, please visit: http://www.choosemyplate.gov/physical-activity.html or http://www.cdc.gov/physicalactivity/everyone/guidelines/children.html.
Did you know Food Service introduced a new software to track student meal accounts? The district began using a new software to track student meal accounts. All student and adult account balances were transferred to the new system, as well as free or reduced lunch status and information about student allergies.
To connect with the new system, please click on the SchoolCafé button on the Food Service webpage at http://foodservices.smsd.org. You’ll need to set up username and password.
There are multiple benefits to this new software, called SchoolCafé, including the ability to:
- Apply for free or reduced meal benefits.
- View your child's account balance anytime.
- See exactly what a la carte items are being purchased.
- Set limits on a la carte purchases (any limits set from the old system will not roll over into the new system).
Don’t forget – if your child receives free or reduced meals, they are eligible for one breakfast and one lunch per day as part of this benefit. All breakfast and lunch meal choices are available for all students regardless of eligibility status.
The school breakfast menus, lunch menus, and other nutrition information are available on the district’s website at http://foodservices.smsd.org.
SMSD Recess Policy
The SMSD district recess policy is that all students will go outside if the regular temp is above 15 degrees and the windchill is above 0. We will not allow students to stay indoors for recess unless they have a documented health condition and note from a healthcare provider (doctor or nurse practitioner) stating the student must stay inside for recess. A note from a parent is not adequate. Please make sure your student has proper outdoor attire: coat, hat and gloves during the winter months.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Flu Prevention Tips From the CDC
Vaccination against the flu each fall remains the primary way to prevent this disease. In addition to vaccination, the following simple actions can help decrease the spread of respiratory illnesses like the flu.
- Avoid close contact.
Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too. - Stay home when you are sick.
When you are sick or have flu symptoms, stay home, get plenty of rest, and check with a health care provider as needed. - Cough or sneeze into your sleeve.
You can cough or sneeze into your sleeve, so that the germs aren't dispersed into the room. It may prevent those around you from getting sick. - Clean your hands.
Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs. When soap and water are not available, alcohol-based disposable hand wipes or gel sanitizers may be used.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
Germs are often spread when a person touches something that is contaminated with germs and then touches his or her eyes, nose, or mouth.
