The Weekly Update #20
22-26 January 2024
Week In Review
Math:
5th: We finished adding fractions and started learning how to subtract fractions. The key to both is finding the common denominator and then creating equivalent fractions.
Honors Math: Learned how to multiply and divide fractions
4th: Learned how to add and subtract fractions with like denominators
Language Arts:
We finished a story about creaky stairs and then started a historical narrative about signing the Declaration of Independence from the perspective of our chosen Founding Father.
Word Study-
Using the results from the December Spelling Inventory, new Word Study groups were created, and all of the students had their new words. New Word Study packets should also have made it home; please use these to help your student prepare for the mastery tests. The student will receive a classroom dollar when they return the completed packet to school on their test day.
Red Group: Triple R-Blends, SCR, STR, SPR. Words with triple blends require careful listening to hear all the tightly meshed sounds.
Yellow Group: unaccented final syllable (ER, AR, OR): When -er, -ar, and -or fall in the final, unaccented syllable, they make the -er sound
Green Group: prefixes (dis-, mis-, pre-) (dis- means "not" or "the opposite of," mis- means to do something "wrongly," and pre- means "before")
Blue Group: Adding -ion and -ian, not spelling change. The suffix -ion signals nouns and refers to an "action or process" or " the result of an action or process."' the suffix -ian signals people who do things related to the base word. (invent - invention; magic - magician)
Purple Group: Latin Roots: To Look, Carry, and Shape (spect, port, form). Spect means "to look at,"' port, "to carry or harbor," and form means "shape."
Science:
We started our Earth Science unit and made models of the schoolyard. Using the models, we created a map using grids.
Social Studies:
The students chose one of the Founding Fathers who signed the Declaration of Independence and presented a little biographical sketch of them. They will be writing a narrative about the day the Declaration of Independence was signed through the point of view of their chosen signer.
SNOW SCHOOL!!!
Snow School is this Tuesday!
Please click the links below for the list of items each student must bring and the pre-check QR code.
Most students have returned the permission/liability slip. If you still need to, please print the Parent Letter, sign it, and return it to school by Monday. I'd hate for any of our students to miss out on this field trip because we still need their signed permission slips.
ALSO, Bogus is asking for a $6.00 donation from all students who participate in Snow School. If you have not already and can, please send the $6.00 with your student on Monday or Tuesday at the latest.
I'm looking forward to this field trip!
