December 2020 / IGSD NEWSLETTER

Panther Families,

2020 has been quite the year! A lot of us might have wished for it to be over with hopes that 2021 will be better and yet it is hard to believe that we just have one short month left. December is sure to fly by. We will try to make December special, especially for our students, but things of course will be different. How can it not be when we can’t even have our annual school store which first grade teachers organize, the community supports, and students “purchase” gifts for their parents? It saddens all of us that we can’t do wonderful things for kids, but I believe these changes won’t break IG. We will continue to invest in our people even when we can’t do some things that have brought us joy in the past.

With Thanksgiving so recently past, we do not yet have the 2020 vision (pun intended) that we will in a couple of weeks on how gatherings impacted the pandemic and schools reopening. For many of us, Thanksgiving was very different from most years. However, we made the best of what we had. Here are some ideas that families implemented over Thanksgiving that might give others ideas to try for the upcoming holidays:

  • Share a meal with only the people who live in your household.

  • Prepare meals in a way that doesn't involve contact, this can be a great way to safely share the holidays with family, friends, and neighbors, especially those at higher risk of severe illness from COVID-19.

  • Meet virtually with friends and family. Have a virtual dinner. Consider virtually connecting while you cook or for games after your meal.

  • Shop online rather than in person.

  • Watch sports events, parades, and movies from home.

If you are interested in getting tested for COVID, appointments are not required. It is requested that those who wish to be tested pre-register at Testing is free and open to anyone (age 5+) who feels they have a need to be tested. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian with consent. Once registered, an email will be sent with your own personal QR code and links to more information on how to get tested.

I realize that parents, educators, and the community as a whole are anxious to know what IGSD will do starting December 7th. It is a little too early to make any announcements, but expect something by Thursday, December 3rd. The District will prioritize in person instruction for 4K-5th grade students, but it is too early to say if anybody or everybody will be back to in person instruction.

As always, please reach out to me if you have any questions, concerns, or would just like to connect.

IG Staff Appreciation

In addition, we would like to support our local businesses and services in our communities. Food, gas, oil changes, snow services, nail sessions, haircuts, anything! If you are interested in giving our area businesses a boost for the holidays AND giving to our staff, please purchase a gift certificate or item from a local business or service. Please mail or drop off at the IGEMS Office to the attention of IG Staff Appreciation. If you wish to send a monetary donation, we will purchase items for you or use it as a cash prize. Please let us know your preference.

Child Development Screenings

The Iowa-Grant School District will be offering developmental screenings to children in our district who are between the ages of 2 ½ and 4 who are not currently enrolled in school. This screening will look at fine motor skills, speech and language development, and preschool readiness skills. Screenings will be held in the Early Childhood classroom the 3nd Friday of every month. The next screening date will be on Friday, December 18th. If you are interested in signing your child up for a screening please call the Iowa-Grant office at 943-6313. Please let the office know if you have concerns about your child’s development when you call to set up the screening. We look forward to seeing you soon!

FREE Panther Packs - Weekend meals/snacks for our Panthers

We have such generous donors in our communities. They have provided food and funds to help us stock our shelves for the Panther Packs program. We are happy to send home a backpack with food for the weekend for families who need a little extra support. We are happy to help! Please call Christi at the IGEMS Office or Alisha at the IGHS Office to sign up. We will arrange a pick up on Thursdays with the Free Meals pickup or arrange a drop off for our Panther Packs families during our virtual weeks. We have volunteers ready to help.

Iowa-Grant Toy Drive - New Information this Year

Celebrate the season of giving by sharing your new or gently used toys (please no stuffed animals!) and books with the families of the Iowa-Grant School District! If your child has outgrown a toy or that toy they had to have last year has been sitting on the shelf for the last 6 months, now is the time to send it to a new home where it can be loved by another child! Toys and books will be collected from now until December 1st. New this year we will also be accepting monetary donations to fill wish lists for our families. If you are interested in sending in a monetary donation please send it to the school to the attention of IG Toy Drive.

Toy Drive Santa Sacks

Due to covid we will not have a toy distribution night but families can email Darcy Breuer at to sign up your family. Sign up deadline is December 11th! Please include the following things in the email: your name and the best way to contact you, child(ren)’s age and gender, and a wish list of 2-3 items for each child.

Staff members will make up a “Santa sack” for your family and you will be notified when your sack is ready to pick up at the school.

If you have any questions please contact Darcy Breuer at

Free and Reduced Application

You can fill out an application at any time, not just the beginning of the school year. Even though meals are free now, we want families to know that identifying eligible families also helps our district qualify for other opportunities. Even if you don't think you might qualify, we encourage you to apply. The process is strictly confidential and our district bookkeeper is the only person authorized to know which families qualify. Please contact Cathy Kohlenberg for information or an application: (608) 943-6313 or
