Morning Music Selection of the Week at HES!
Mozart - Symphony number 40.
The date of this symphony is known exactly, because Mozart years kept a full catalog of his completed works; he entered the 40th Symphony into it on 25 July 1788.
Work on the symphony lasted just a few weeks during which time he also completed the 39th and 41st symphonies.
The 40th symphony has two versions - one includes parts for a pair of clarinets. Most likely, the clarinet parts were added in a revised version.
As with all of Mozart’s symphonies, this one has four movements or sections. The section we will be listening to this week is the Andante or third section.
The first performance of this symphony was in Dresden in Germany on April 14, 1789.
It is one of Mozart’s most popular symphonies.
