ATHLETICS
(New) Eastview High School Girls Varsity Hockey beat Lakeville North High School 5-3 - 2/2/21
The Lightning struck just 41 seconds into the game when senior Lainey Dwinnell fired a shot from the right circle and senior Brynn Swenson poked in the rebound at the left side of the crease. Two minutes later, Eastview doubled its lead. Senior Mikayla Kelley skated the puck across the middle of the Panthers’ zone and found Benadum at the point where she placed a laser in the back of the net. The Panthers cut the lead to one, but the Lightning scored again to make it 3-1 at the end of one. Sophomore Jessica Wilhelm moved the puck from deep in the Panthers’ end back to Benadum for another blue-line rocket. The shots in the first were 11-8.
Both teams scored in the second. Eastview tallied first, at 10:54, when Benadum hit Kelley flying out of the Lightning zone and Kelley beat the defense and the goalie, upper corner, blocker side. The Panthers made it 4-2 at 15:12. Shots after two were 18-14.
At 11:52 of the third, the Panthers cut the lead to one. With 51 seconds left, however, the Lightning put the game away. Kelley hit junior Avery Chesek moving toward the net and Chesek fed Wilhelm at the far side for the tap in. Freshman goalie Lila Hanson saw her first varsity action in the third and made 6 saves to preserve the win. Final score: 5-3. Shots: 27-21.
