Ms. Pedraza's Happy Campers

Our adventures

Welcome parents to our 1st grade community. I am Ms. Pedraza. I attended the Univeristy of Houston and from the start I knew I wanted to work with first grade. I am very happy to get to work with all the children and I am ready to learn from them as well. Check in with us weekly to see what adventures we are working on in class.

Math at Hand

Money moves the world. This week in math we will learn to identify U.S. coins. We will use the relationship between the coins to determine the value of a collection of pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. I will be incorporating activities into our math center that will further enhance this skill. Below you will find a video that while entertaining it can help the students get further practice at home learning our coins.

The 3 Little Pigs

Our reading and language arts assignments this week will go hand-in-hand. We will begin our unit on fables this week. Monday I will introduce the children to fables by reading them The 3 Little Pigs. As we read the story I will go over the literary elements that make up a fable. This will lead to the students writing an original fable. We will be going over the writing process as well as they write their stories. Students will create their own illustrations and they will take their original book home to share with the family when it all comes together.

This Week in Texas

With the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo in full swing our Social Studies Unit will focus on facts about our beautiful state. We will learn how Texas became a part of the United States. We will also learn about some of our state symbols. To end our unit we will learn about how the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo helps the community by contributing to the education of our children through scholarships.

Spring Break!

Before going on spring break we will be going over safety precautions that should be taken during this time. Together we will come up with ways and or rules to follow when riding bicycles, when playing at the park, and also when playing at home. We will also discuss areas where it is safe to play and areas we should avoid. We will be ending the week on a good note by learning what we should and should not do while we are on vacation.

Have a great week.

I want to wish everyone a happy and safe spring break. Enjoy the time off. I am looking forward to getting back to school and hearing all the adventures that occur during our time away.
