Dear Parents,
WE are so proud of all of the instrumental music students who have been working so hard throughout this school year. It is truly remarkable how much success they are having while under such adverse conditions! Please enjoy the Combined Elementary Band performing Gravity Falls as well as the Combined Elementary Orchestra performing The Salamander Samba If you would like to see other performances throughout the district, they can be found here.
As more virtual performances are being assembled, they will be added to the site! If your child somehow didn’t make it into either of these videos, it’s not too late! There are more videos ahead that we are excited to share with you and the students will be continuing to work all of the way through to the end of the school year. We hope that you enjoy the videos and we thank you for your continued support of your children and their interest in instrumental music.
Sincerely,
Rich Beckman, Christine Macaulay, Chris Miller, Andrew Prettelt, Cassandra Sicolo and Jake Weber
FREE BOOK DISTRIBUTION & WE LEARN THROUGH SERVICE
We Learn Through Service
It is with great excitement that I introduce to you our WE Learn Through Service group that is open to students Grades K-12 within our school district. This group was born from the goals and work of the district’s Cultural Proficiency, Character Education, and Equity Committee. The purpose of this group is to work on service learning projects inspired by our students’ voices to solve community and world issues. The group was introduced a couple of months ago and we recruited early adopters to work on a format for this work to occur. Our hope is that students become empowered to continue this work in a sustainable fashion as the group will grow in participants who will bring varied levels of expertise and interest to our discussions and actions.
The work of our early adopters focused on an effort to focus on the power and importance of reading. Our WE Learn Through Service Group has been meeting to plan actions that will inspire students to read, provide opportunities for libraries to grow to have more books that represent authors and characters of color, and make books available to those who may not have access for reasons outside of their control.
The WE Learn Though Service group has been creating an online library of recorded stories, book advertisements, and information on the importance of reading. The group has also been researching ways to assist other organizations in collecting and distributing books.
Our WE Learn Through Service group’s first action is in collaboration with the great work of BookSmiles. We will be advertising and facilitating the distribution of books at two events. Our first will be at the district food distribution scheduled at HS West on April 26, 2021 from 12pm – 2pm and again from 4pm – 6pm. Our second distribution of books will occur at the district food distribution scheduled at HS East on May 3, 2021 from 12pm – 2pm and again from 4pm – 6pm.
Our WE Learn Through Service group that will be working on this project and other projects in the future. Students who join the group will be invited to meetings (currently occurring via Google Meet) and asked to participate whenever their schedule allows. This group will have many flexible opportunities for students to participate around any other commitments they may have now or in the future as well as what talents they believe they can share in the work we complete. Roles of participation will range as there are many needs aligned with service learning projects.
