message from the principal
Q: How often do you conduct safety drills?
A: We conduct fire evacuation drills every month and code red drills every other month.
Q: What do students and staff do during these drills?
A: For fire drills, we practice leaving classrooms quickly and quietly when we hear the fire alarm. For code red drills, we practice sheltering in place. Students are taught to look at and listen to their teacher for directions on what to do. We want our staff and students to be prepared to respond to any type of emergency.
Q: I've heard that CUSD uses an online system to account for students during code red. Is there a backup if the online system doesn't work?
A: Yes, staff will use email or phones as backup if our online emergency response system isn't working.
Q: Why are the perimeter gates open?
A: We open the gates before school and lock them after school has started. They are opened again before school is out.
Q: When will Sierra View get fencing across the front of the campus?
A: We are scheduled to get fencing across the front of our campus in early Spring 2018. This fence will create a single point of entry for our campus. We will be able to monitor who is coming and going with the security cameras that were installed this year.
Q: Do we need to sign in when we come on campus (to volunteer, attend a family event, etc.)?
A: Yes, we expect all visitors to sign in and wear a visitor sticker.
Q: Why isn't there a crossing guard at Hooker Oak and Madrone?
A: The Chico Police Department provides crossing guards at schools that meet certain criteria. Our intersection didn't meet their criteria when they surveyed to determine which schools would have crossing guards. A parent suggested in the end of year survey last year that we move supervision from the bike rack to the corner. We will make this change after Thanksgiving Break, though district policy prohibits our staff from walking out into the road. The supervisor will help kids determine when it is safe to cross the road.

Dear CUSD Families,
Chico Unified School District takes students and staff safety extremely seriously. The recent events in neighboring Tehama County reinforce the need for our school administrators and staff to continue their vigilance in monitoring our school campuses.
Thanks to the support of our community, CUSD recently passed Measure K. Funds from Measure K have been used to increase security at our campuses, including security fencing, single points of entry, and security cameras. In addition, each school develops a Safe School Plan every year.
District and site leadership teams work with school site staff to ensure that the staff knows how to respond in a variety of situations, ranging from severe weather to an intruder on campus. To this end, CUSD schools have been holding Code Red Drills to reinforce with students and staff how to respond in case of an emergency. Further, students and staff are encouraged to immediately report any suspicious activities or behaviors that cause unease.
We encourage families to check Twitter (@Chico_Unified) and our website (www.chicousd.org) as we update information, including school safety messages, on a regular basis.
It is our desire that through the work we do on a daily basis, Chico Unified can play a part in ending senseless violence in our communities. This includes the work being done to improve our school facilities as well as our focus on the social, emotional, and academic development of our students.
CUSD offers both heartfelt condolences and any support we can provide to all those impacted by the events in Rancho Tehama.
Sincerely,
Kelly
