This week's Tech Tool: Microsoft Forms
Microsoft Forms allows teachers and students to quickly and easily create custom quizzes, surveys, questionnaires, registrations, and more.
What is Microsoft Forms?
Forms was designed to be super easy so that anyone could confidently create forms and easily see results as they come in. Forms lets anyone with an Office 365 Education account create and/or respond to quizzes, surveys, questionnaires, and more using any web browser (even on mobile devices). As results are submitted, the built-in analytics feature allows users to evaluate responses.
What makes Forms both unique and valuable for educators is the automatic grading and in-quiz feedback functionality. Automatic grading does exactly what the name implies and greatly reduces the time spent grading. Additionally, Form data, such as quiz results, can be easily exported to Excel for additional analysis or grading.

How can a Teacher use Microsoft Forms?
- Assess Prior Knowledge – Use Forms to find out what your students know about a topic or their proficiency with a particular skill before you introduce a lesson or unit. You can maximize instructional time by determining the appropriate level of instruction in advance.
- Gather Instant Feedback – In-quiz feedback is a feature that lets quiz authors personalize messages depending how students answer questions. For example, if a student answers a question incorrectly, he or she may get a message such as, “The answer is incorrect. I suggest you review chapter four as this will be on the final.”
- Deliver Easy Digital (Formative Assessment) Exit Tickets – After completing a lesson, assess with a series of Forms questions instead of paper exit tickets. You won't have to print new exit tickets each day, and you can choose the questions at the end of the lesson to be sure they fit the content and skills you covered. Furthermore, you won't have to take those exit tickets home to grade! You can view the results later as you plan the next day's lesson to make sure the level of instruction is appropriate. You'll also know who's going to need extra help or enrichment.
How can a coach use Microsoft Forms?
- The Forms platform is ideal to use in Professional Development trainings and in PLCs as it allows the user to collect data multiple ways (e.g., anonymous, participant names, and/or email addresses). In addition, the data can be exported into spreadsheets that allow the user to sort and analyze results.
- You can use this as a pre-assessment prior to new learning, as a quick review before or after a p.d. session, or as a fun survey to to build culture in your building. The possibilities are endless!
