Kindergarten
In reading, the students will be exploring our world by studying and reading about many topics. The children will learn about maps and globes, landforms, and how seasons affect our weather. As the students are writing based on the texts they will utilize different Thinking Maps such as tree maps and flow maps to help organize the information.
In math, we will continue classifying objects and sorting them according to how many in each group. A fun at home activity would be to have your child help with sorting laundry. The children can sort their clothes in a variety of ways and can count how many are in each group. The students will also begin exploring the concept of addition, which is joining two groups together to form a large group.
Our science unit on matter will tie in nicely with math as we observe different objects and describe their different attributes such as color, size, shape, weight, texture, etc. The students will participate in collaborative conversations as they support their choices in how they sorted the objects.
First Grade
First grade has been diligently working in all subjects. We have also moved into the SIPPS program , so we ask parents to continue to daily review and work on the sight words that are on the yellow homework paper to encourage fluent reading of the SIPPS stories. Please make sure you are checking your child's folder to see information that is going home. The Fall Festival is coming up and we could use volunteers, please let your child's teacher know if you are able to help out. Finally, we'd like to thank the Deltona Fire Department for coming and sharing information about fire safety with us. The students were super excited to see all the tools on the truck as well as learn how to identify a firefighter in full gear. . Don't for get the Book Fair will be the week of October 6-13. Again, we appreciate the community support.

Fourth Grade
Fourth grade is looking forward to “Investigation Fridays.” Students will do investigations on current topics in Science. Some topics students may begin investigating are rocks, properties of matter, changes in matter and energy. This is a hands on approach for students to really get into the lesson and understand what is looks like from a scientists perspective. If you have twitter or would like to follow Deltona Lakes, please add the twitter name. ( could you please help me out with this part, I don’t know the name of it) As we completed these investigations, we will post pictures so you can ask your students about what they were doing during the investigations.
Fifth Grade
Hi Eagles!! 5th grade is excited about Science in October!!!! We are looking forward to a fun filled month while strengthening our knowledge of the Scientific Process! Its never too early to start thinking about those Science Fair Projects 5th Grade!!!
We are wrapping up our investigation of scientific tools. Each 5th grade student got the opportunity to explore, work with, and discover various tools that scientists use, while earning color-printed tool cards!! It was so much FUN!! Next, we are going to conduct an experiment on germs! (Don't worry...we will be sanitary! This experiment involves slices of bread put in baggies). We also have an experiment in the works with Alka-Seltzer. (No, we don't have stomachaches!) We are going to be learning about how fast Alka-Seltzer dissolves in different types of water, such as salt water, hot water, cold water, vinegar water, and regular water. We are also going to be discussing why one type of water dissolves Alka-Seltzer faster than another, and how this relates to our own bodies. Pretty exciting.
We are also looking forward to growing tomato plants!! We will be growing tomato plants in different kinds of soil to see which type of soil grows the plants bigger and better and why. Seems like we will need to do a little bit of research on this one!! As always, we will be discussing controls, variables, data charts and conclusions!!
Way to be Scientists 5th grade!!!
