Words of Wisdom

Doing Right

Knowing what's right doesn't mean much unless you do what's right.
~ Theodore Roosevelt

In the classroom, teachers are privy to some pretty interesting conversations. Just when a student figures you are out of earshot, you may hear all about their crazy weekend, or a hilarious musing on the topic of the day. There's also a dark side to hearing what others think you cannot; the mean talk — gossiping, spreading rumors, being cruel about others when they are not there to defend themselves. It is important to let your students know that unkind language will not be tolerated, but that respectful language benefits everyone and that diverse ideas and opinions can be discussed in a civil manner in your classroom. That's doing the right thing for everyone.
