Principal's Desk

Please join us for an amazing evening of jazz and blues at Grant HS, featuring the Beaumont Symphonic Band, the Jazz Ambassadors, the Jazz Academy, Combo 7, and the Advanced Choir! The event will be today, Friday, January 10 at 6:30 pm. We will be joined on stage by Portland's own Marilyn Keller--jazz and gospel superstar--who will perform with each ensemble and the Grant Jazz Ensemble. This fundraiser is a huge part of what makes jazz studies available to students regardless of financial means, and with your help, we are able to provide full or partial scholarships to several students in need.

Tickets are $12.00 in advance, and can be purchased on SchoolPay:

Hope to see you there!

Big picture

While the Nutrition Services department has processed thousands of applications for free/reduced price meal benefits for families this fall and many others were directly certified (eligible) because they received SNAP benefits, we are finding that families who were eligible last year may not have reapplied this school year. On October 10, all families who were eligible last school year (2018-19) and did not reapply this school year, switched from free/reduced status to paid status. It is not too late. Families can apply at any time. If a family’s financial situation has changed midyear, they can still apply throughout the school year. Please note that the USDA Child Nutrition Programs are not subject to the “Public Charge” and will not jeopardize anyone’s immigration status: From the US Citizenship and Immigration Services Website: Any benefits not listed not in the rule are excluded from consideration. Notably, the rule does not include consideration of emergency medical assistance, disaster relief, national school lunch programs, foster care and adoption, student and mortgage loans, energy assistance, food pantries and homeless shelters and Head Start. Please contact our department for further support: or 503-916-3402

PPS Successful School Survey Announcement

In 2019-20, Portland Public Schools is partnering again with Panorama Education to gather student, staff, and family feedback in order to give school and district leaders actionable data points that will help them improve student experiences across the district. Building off of baseline data from 2018-19, the results will be used to help schools understand the needs of their students, staff, and families, as well as support the development of school climate and improvement plans.

This year students, families and staff will be surveyed. Every student in grades 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, and 10 will be given the opportunity to take the survey. All families in the district will have the opportunity to take the survey regardless of their students’ grade level, and the survey will be available in all our supported languages. All school-based staff will have the opportunity to share their feedback.

What are the key dates?

  • January 27 - February 14: Administer Staff and Student Surveys

  • January 27 - February 28: Administer Family Surveys

  • April/May- Share district level report to School Board and Public
