Laurel Staff Weekly Update

September 19-23, 2016

#whyIteach

I teach because I get to see kids every day. I teach because it's important to me that kids find school to be a safe place, a haven, a fun place, somewhere they know they can be themselves. I teach because they CAN. I teach because I enjoy watching students find success, even when they think they cannot.

I came across the TED talk below again this weekend. I'm sure many of you have seen it, but it's worth another view.

Get ready to your photo op! I will be asking you to take a picture with your #whyIteach bubble this week.

For classified staff - I'd like to get one of you as well. I will have thought bubbles in my office for you to pick up, reflect on why you do what you do here at Laurel. What is YOUR Why?

Have a great week! Be a champion!

I'm Going to College - UCLA Football

Laurel was awarded 100 tickets to the I'm Going to College event on Saturday 10/1. The event is held at the Rose Bowl and includes tickets to a UCLA Football game vs. Arizona. The game time still has not been set yet, however I'm in need of chaperones to attend the event with me and our 5th & 6th grade students who want to attend.

You can read a little about the event HERE.

Once I know the number of students who would like to attend, all other tickets will be available to Laurel staff and families. :-)

Please let me know if you are willing to chaperone our students to this amazing opportunity.

Character Day - Thursday, 9/22

Thursday is national Character Day. A day to focus on developing positive character in our students. I do not plan on doing anything schoolwide, beyond a quick announcement on being a positive citizen. If you are interested in doing a lesson or two in your classroom to develop positive citizenship there are some lessons here: Growth Mindset from Class Dojo - 5 Days of Lessons & Videos HERE
