Quail Valley Elementary School students demonstrate ability to “Learn-Serve-Lead” at Global Leadership Event (5/20/2016)
FORT BEND ISD – A sense of pride and honor was felt throughout the hallways of Quail Valley Elementary School as students demonstrated leadership in action before an audience of District administrators, parents and community members. The school hosted a Global Leadership Night that welcomed guests to observe the overall positive attitude and commitment to learning that is taking place on campus.
The evening presentation included a panel discussion, student testimonials and performances, and student recital of “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.” The 7 Habits include: Be Proactive, Begin with the End in Mind, Put First things First, Think Win-Win, Seek First to Understand, Synergize, and Sharpen the Saw. At Quail Valley, these principles have become a way of life.
“We introduced our students to the ‘The 7 Habits’ two years ago to help create a more positive culture at our school,” said Nikki Spears, Principal. “Doing so has provided the framework for us to teach students to self-manage, set goals, and work and learn from others.“
Quail Valley also stresses the importance of being a leader among its student population. The school team chose the path of leadership, realizing that in order for learning to take place, more than one leader must exist.
“When you think of leadership, you normally think of a position, such as a CEO, manager or supervisor,” added Spears. “Rarely do we see students as leaders. But when you think of leadership as an attitude, everyone is a leader, including our students as young as five years of age.”
With a student focus on this year’s theme, “Learn, Serve and Lead,” Quail Valley has experienced noticeable changes among students. Over the past year, the school has noted a decrease in discipline referrals, and the culture is one that is positive, innovative, and productive.
“Our students have learned to take 100-percent responsibility for their actions,” said Lisa Jones, Campus Compliance Coordinator and parent. “They know that they are in charge of their thoughts and decisions and that both can lead to certain outcomes.”
Following are a few of the comments students made regarding their school and its focus on leadership:
“The 7 Habits have taught me to be respectful of others.”
“I feel better about myself and my school.”
“When we see other students doing wrong, we help them get back on track.”
Quail Valley’s goal is to become a “Leader in Me” school, which will allow staff to become licensed to teach The 7 Habits. The school is currently taking donations and sponsoring fundraisers to support that goal. The Girls’ Run Club has already raised $1,100 toward the campaign.

QVE's Buddy Program a HUGE Success! Thanks Ms. Bathe!
In January, Ms. Bathe implemented a school-wide Buddy Program as a way to help older students collaborate with younger students. The activities completed in the buddy program were meant to be fun and engaging. This program was created to development skills, decrease discipline problems, create young leaders, increase academic performance, increase student motivation and stimulate opportunities for both the younger and older students. Having a peer "buddy" both set of students will feel a sense of pride and joy when working with their buddy.
A huge thanks to Ms. Bathe for her dedication and passion to our students success!

From Our Reading Specialist, Ms. Portugal
We now have Raz-Kids accounts for K-2 classes for the 2016-2017 school year!
The PO has been pushed through and we already have been granted access. This subscription is good through March 29, 2017! I wanted us to take full advantage of the access starting NOW! J
Here’s how it will work:
You should have received an email with your username and password.
Please login in ASAP and add your students as users. It’s under “Manage Students” Their site is very user friendly. When you add your students, make sure you have each student’s current reading level, which you will assign. There are spots for 36 kiddos. We may ask you to please add a few extra kids on your account from another teacher’s class if we don’t have enough space.
You can print out usernames and letters to parents that are all prepared for you with one click. You can access data reports on how the students are doing and check on their progress.
I will be more than happy to help you navigate the website if you need help with how to enter your students or assign their level. I can also help with printing out reports.
We have high hopes that every student will utilize this awesome resource over the summer break. Once you have entered the student, they have to read their way and answer comprehension questions through several books at that assigned level in order to be automatically advanced to the next level. The students can earn point and use them to build little avatar characters.
Let me know if I can help you with this awesome resource in any way.
