TOMORROW - VALENTINE SPIRIT DAY AT ALTA VISTA
We are celebrating Valentines Day with a Spirit Day on February 14th. Please encourage your child to show his/her love by wearing pink, purple, or red!
"EDUCATION FOR THE FUTURE" SURVEY
There's still time to participate in this year's "Education for the Future" survey. The survey will take about five to ten minutes to complete and is available online through Friday. If you have children that attend two different schools, please complete one survey for each school site.
To get started, please go to the following link or go to the Alta Vista website and click on the link found on the home page: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/UnionPAR_AltaVistaElem
BLACK HISTORY MONTH
February is Black History Month and it is a great learning opportunity for families. With the Presidents Week Break, you might want to consider spending some time exploring the African American Freedom Trail, or reading about notable African American Women. Some excellent movies for teens or young adults include Remember the Titans and Selma. The San Francisco Public Library has also curated an extensive list of books for children of all ages. You'll find a PDF of the recommended stories at the bottom of this newsletter. Enjoy some time reading and learning together.

RELAY FOR LIFE - APRIL 26/27
Relay for Life is a team fundraising event where team members take turns walking around a track. Each event is 6-24 hours in length and each team is asked to have a member on the track at all times to signify that cancer never sleeps. Teams also set up a themed campsite at the event and often continue their fundraising efforts by collecting donations for food, goods, games, and activities. All of the money counts towards their overall team fundraising goal and is given to the American Cancer Society to fund their research and support efforts.
Let's make sure that Alta Vista is big part of this year's Relay for Life. If you have an existing team, let us know so that we can support your fundraising efforts. If you would like to start a team or join a team, visit the Relay for Life website for more information.
DONATION DAY
We realize that not everyone will be able to join a team or perhaps even attend the event, but are still looking for a way to contribute, there is another way to help. Union School District is hosting a donation drop-off day for the American Cancer Society's Discovery Shops. On Saturday, March 2nd, there will be a donation drop at Oster Elementary School. We are looking for new or gently used donations of clothing, artwork, housewares, cookbooks, and collectibles. All donations will go to the American Cancer Society's Discovery Shops which support cancer awareness, cancer prevention, and cancer support.
If you can't make it to the drop-off event, you can still bring your donations to Alta Vista and we will deliver them to Oster on March 2nd.
Thank you for your generosity and support.
