The Knightly News
Parent Newsletter - April 2023
Principal’s Message
Hello Knight Families,
Spring is in the air as we approach the beginning of the fourth quarter and spring break. Our spring musical, The Addams Family, was a huge success. We truly appreciate the support from our amazing parents and community members who came out to see the amazing show our students and staff produced. We’ve also kicked off our spring sports season and continue to look forward to seeing you in the stands cheering on our Knights!
April is Autism Awareness Month. It is believed that about one out of 100 children is diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, making it very likely that we will interact daily with someone impacted by autism. Let this be a reminder for us to be inclusive and accepting of those who struggle with autism while also celebrating their strengths and abilities.
April is also the Month of the Military Child. As a recipient of the Purple Star Award, Kellam High School has been recognized for our commitment to meeting the unique needs our military students face. We’d like to thank our military families for the commitment and sacrifices they make every day while serving our country. We encourage you to Purple-Up by wearing purple on April 19!
We also don’t want to forget our amazing library media specialists as we celebrate School Library Month. Ms. Spreder, Ms. Crow, and Ms. Manco do an excellent job in supporting our students, whether they are looking for a great book to read or need assistance with conducting research. They also support our teachers in developing engaging lessons like break-out boxes and creating podcasts.
Wednesday, April 5, is paraprofessional's day and April 3-7 is National Assistant Principal's Week. We are fortunate to have such an amazing staff that ensures Kellam runs smoothly.
As we enter the last quarter of the school year, I encourage you to check in with your students about their grades, attendance, and tardiness. As the weather warms up and the finish line can be seen in the distance, it can be tempting to lose focus. If your student requires additional assistance, please reach out to their teacher, counselor, and/or administrator. Let’s finish the school year strong!
I hope everyone has an enjoyable spring break!

Counseling Update
AP Testing
AP Exams will be administered from May 1 – May 12 at Kellam. Families should review their student’s testing schedule in Total Registration and reach out to Kellam’s AP Coordinator, Juliana Caruso, as soon as possible if there are any known conflicts. Also, please be sure the contact emails and phone numbers in Total Registration for both students and parents are correct, as important testing information, room locations, and logistics will be sent to those contacts in the coming weeks. Please be on the lookout for that communication.
Deadline to register for the AP exams has already passed. If a student wishes to cancel an exam, they should request the cancellation in Total Registration to initiate the refund, minus the $40 cancellation fee.
Class of 2023 Scholarships
As we spring into Scholarship Season, our school counseling department would like to share information to help encourage seniors to search, find, and apply for scholarships.
To search for local scholarships, students are encouraged to utilize our school division’s scholarship website, Scholarship Central and our school’s scholarship listings, Kellam Senior Scholarships. Both resources are updated on a regular basis, so it is important to check the sites regularly for new scholarship opportunities.
We also need your help to identify all students who have been offered a scholarship. This information will be used to determine scholarship totals for the Class of 2023 as well as recognitions for the Senior Awards Program this June. Individual scholarships, money offered from potential colleges, and the GI Bill should be reported. This Google Form provides instructions and additional details: Class of 2023 Scholarship Reporting.
