The Goshen Gazette

March 2020

From the Principal - Mr. Graves

Greetings Goshen Lane Families!

Welcome to March! Winter is on the way out (even though we really have not had much of a winter) and spring is soon to come. Spring often reminds us of new growth. Grass growing in yards, leaves growing on trees, flowers growing in gardens and so much more. We also look forward to the continued growth of our students. Students growing as readers, writers, scientist, mathematicians, and so much more.

To help your child continue to grow, here are a few tips you might fine helpful and enjoyable as you work with your child(ren)

  • Board games that involve eliminating possibilities develop deductive reasoning. For your next family game night, try playing Clue, Mastermind, Stratego, Guess Who?, or Battleship. Tip: Look for gently used games at thrift shops and online yard sales.

  • Take turns writing random sentences and scrambling each word. (“Hte rowbn woc tea srags.”) How many words must be unscrambled to read the sentence? Maybe just a few—encourage your child to use context clues from the unscrambled words to figure out the others.

  • Let your child hide a “treasure” (perhaps a stuffed animal) and draw a map that you’ll use to find it. The map could include the rooms of your house and have an X on the location where the treasure is stashed. When you find it, it’s your turn to hide it and make a map.

  • Legos make it easy to demonstrate fractions. Use a brick with 8 studs (bumps) as a whole. Ask your child what fraction of a whole other Legos are. Examples: A 1-stud brick = 1/8, a 4-stud brick = 1/2. What other fractions can your youngster find?

YEA for the PTA

Congratulations! And a big "Thank You" to the PTA for a successful Movie Night. There was a great turn out with lots of smiles and fun had by all. If you are not a member of the PTA, or have not participated in any PTA sponsored events, please consider giving it a try. They are doing great things for staff and students at Goshen Lane and would certainly appreciate the extra support. Next up - the school dance.

We Are the World - A Cultural Celebration

Thursday, March 19, 2020 5:30-7:30 p.m.

ALL families are welcome to join us for dinner and an evening of celebrating the cultures of Goshen Lane. We will provide some food, and families are encouraged to bring a dish from their culture to share, as well. Following the potluck dinner, there will be learning opportunities for parents and students. The theme for this year’s event is “Becoming a New American.” Guest speakers will share their personal experiences. The kids will have fun playing games from different cultures, creating art, and learning some words and songs in different languages. We hope to see EVERYONE at this special event!
