College(s):

  • Inspire Texas - School Counseling Certification Program
  • University of North Texas - Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction with Minor in Educational Leadership
  • University of North Texas - Bachelor of Science in Teaching (English, Language Arts, and Reading with ESL supplemental)

Teaching History: This is my 9th year in education. I was a student in Plano ISD K-12, and I returned to teach for the district for my first four years. After moving north, I completed my next four years of teaching in McKinney ISD, closer to home. In my 8 years of experience, I have taught 7th grade English and 4th grade humanities. I have completed internships and certifications in both educational administration and school counseling, and I love using these skills in the classroom to help my students grow in academics, leadership, and social-emotional skills.

Family: My husband John is the owner/operator of Gordon Painting Co. Our daughter Taylor is a Trivium Knight, and our son Cole will be a Knight before we know it! Both John and I’s parents and siblings live close, and we love that we get to see them often.

Interests/Hobbies Outside of School: My family loves activities together including bowling, arcades, and parks. I adore a good book, enjoy crafting with friends, and am attempting adventures in cooking (which leads to pretty funny stories for my third graders)!

Thank you for being such an amazing school community and welcoming us new staff members with open arms!

Welcome Back Mr. Brookins!

Most of our Knight family knows that Derrick Brookins has a new kidney. His return to work has been celebrated for sure. His journey has been long and difficult, but when he got the phone call at 3 a.m. the day of the first day of teacher in-service at the beginning of the year, his adventure began.

He jumped out of bed and drove to Baylor hospital in the middle of the night for preliminary blood work. He returned home to await the call to see if the donor kidney was a perfect match or not a match at all. By 8 a.m. he was at school telling us that he was indeed a perfect match for a new kidney. He was to report to Baylor Hospital after he gathered his things and had surgery that afternoon. The surgery was successful, and the kidney began working almost immediately.

While we were all thrilled for Derrick, we also had to worry about our choir students. Within a few minutes of Derrick’s leaving, we had Rachael Forrester to fill in for him. She retired from Hebron High School and was delighted to not only help out her friend for more than 25 years, but to work with our students until he was well enough to come back to work.

After eight weeks, he returned to Trivium and his students. In his absence he wrote a new Fight Song for our Knights that will be a part of our history. Together, he and Ms. Forrester will conduct the concert on Thursday night. How lucky we are that things always work out in the end, but we are all grateful for Mr. Brookins’ new health and for Ms. Forrester’s friendship.

Our student have the benefit of more than 50 combined years of experience in music. As they put the final touches on their performances, we all have grateful hearts for Mr. Brookins’ health and his ability to recover and come back to his Trivium home.

If I were asked to communicate 3 truths about dyslexia for someone asking, my list would include:

1. Dyslexia is a Learning Difference.

2. Dyslexic differences are associated with strengths in creative thinking and problem solving, but also specific challenges in the areas of reading, writing, and spelling.
3. Often a dyslexic student’s greatest challenges are in the early school years. Fortunately, appropriate instruction tends to be effective. As the challenges tend to recede, strengths also mature and become fully developed. We see dyslexic brain development like the planning for an ambitious building project. If you’re planning something great, you may need a longer period of pouring and setting the foundation.

Race on Nov 21st! Fun Run Activities at Trivium Nov 11th-22nd

BOX TOPS!!! BOX TOPS!!!

Dear Families,

The Box Tops for Education program is changing the way we can earn cash for our school!

Over the summer, participating brands have begun to change their packaging from the traditional Box Tops clip to the new Box Tops label.

Here are the quick things to know -
- Box Tops will be earned digitally by scanning your receipt for the store.
- There will be a mobile app to use for scanning - EASY!!
- Traditional Box Tops at home are still great!! Be sure to send them to school.
- Double Dip!! As the transition is made from clips to digital completely, you can turn the clips in, AND scan the receipt!

Thanks for helping our school get what it needs! The parents in the community make it super easy to put our Thinkers first!!

LASTLY...I will be sending home information regarding contests and challenges related to Box Tops! We have some new ideas this year to make it fun for the kids!

Our first turn in date to the company will be Nov 1, so we have a quick push to get there - but I know our Trivium Families have been saving them!

Flocabulary

Flocabulary is a learning program used for all grades at Trivium. Flocabulary uses educational hip-hop music to engage students and increase content mastery across the curriculum. Flocabulary’s standards-based videos, instructional activities, and student creativity tools supplement instruction and develop core skills. The multisensory approach of using music, rhythm and rhyme is supported by academic research. Music facilitates memorization and recall of academic content, while the use of hip-hop and other culturally-relevant media increases student engagement. From the Week in Rap, to Shakespeare, to Improper Fractions, there’s a Flocabulary for that! How it Works: https://www.flocabulary.com/how-it-works/
