Shoemaker Newsletter
November, 2018
Dear Shoemaker Families,
I hope that I always do a good job of letting you know how appreciative and thankful I am for your partnership in all that we do at Shoemaker Elementary School. Having said that, the month of November, specifically Thanksgiving, provides an opportunity for me to remind you that I am thankful for the Shoemaker School children and their families, as well as our amazing staff. Thank you for your continued support in all that we do. I look forward to seeing you at Parent-Teacher Conferences.
Warmest regards,
Jacqueline Vogel
Principal

IMPORTANT VETERAN'S DAY INFORMATION:
Dear Parents and Guardians,
On November 9th, at 9:15am and 2:00pm, Shoemaker School will be celebrating Veterans’ Day. On this occasion, we are holding our monthly “Mustang Meeting” and having two special ceremonies involving many different ways to help us remember and honor those who are serving in the military, or who have served in the past. All of the grades have a special part in this ceremony. First, we will be having a show displaying the talents of the Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd graders from 9:15-10:00. We will then have another show from 2:00 to 3:00 to display the talents of the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students. You are welcome to come to both or choose one. We realize that the students of Shoemaker School may have some veterans in their families, and we would love for these special family members to come to school for one of the assemblies.. In order to ensure that we have the appropriate space to accommodate our visitors, we ask that you fill out the bottom of this form and return it to your child’s teacher no later than Monday, 11/5. You can also to RSVP Mr. Trexler at gtrexler@eastpennsd.org. Please attach or cut and paste the information in the form below. If you do not wish to attend the ceremony, you do not have to return the form or RSVP.
As years in the past, we would like to have a slideshow presentation that includes pictures of our Shoemaker veterans. This would include family pictures, old military pictures and anything you can find that represents your soldier. We believe by putting a face to the names shown, the Shoemaker family will be able to better recognize the sacrifice these brave soldiers have made.
If you are interested in having your soldier represented in the slide presentation this year, please email Greg Trexler (gtrexler@eastpennsd.org). Once he has received an email, he will share the slide presentation to a Google Drive address of your choosing. You will need to log on to Google Drive using your or your child’s user ID and password. He will send you instructions on how to make your Google slide for your soldier. All you need to do is input the information on the template. He will take care of the rest. Please keep it to one slide per veteran.
Regards,
Veteran’s Day Committee
Please complete this form and return it to your child’s teacher no later than Monday, November 5th. Thank you!

Attention 5th grade parents:
Dear Parents,
Wow! How can it be November already? I feel like time is flying by. This past month we were discussing Respect as our character trait. We talked about being a good sport, treating each other the way we want to be treated, and using manners. It is important that we reinforce the use of please and thank you. In November, our topic will be citizenship. Third thru fifth grades will specifically be focusing on digital citizenship. By the way, this topic will be a parent presentation in the spring.
In October, we collected items for the Washington Elementary School in Allentown SD. We collected hand sanitizer, tissues, Clorox wipes, and afterschool snacks. Our goal was 200 items and we were able to reach that thanks to your generosity.
In November, we will be collecting coats, hats, mittens, and scarves. The items will be split between one of our local soup kitchens and an afterschool program in Philadelphia. We will accept coats of all sizes - all we ask is that they are clean and that the zippers and buttons work.
Thank you so much for your help and generosity in supporting with our projects.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Ringer

LINKS TO LEARNING:
What is FOSS?
This year students in East Penn are embarking on an exploration of science concepts using the Full Option Science System (FOSS). It is a research-based science curriculum developed by the University of California, Berkley. The developers believe, “Scientific knowledge advances when scientists observe objects and events, think about how they relate to what is known, test their ideas in logical ways, and generate explanations that integrate the new information into understanding of the natural world. Engineers apply that understanding to solve real-world problems. Thus, the scientific enterprise is both what we know (content knowledge) and how we come to know it (practices). Science is a discovery activity, a process for producing new knowledge.” Through FOSS lessons, students at Shoemaker are engaging in hands-on, meaningful experiences with scientific practices. Ask your child to share about the science experiments and investigations they have done so far this year. Below is a list of topics covered by each grade level to help get the conversation started tonight!
