Mideastern Region PSEA

December Newsletter

Welcome to the Mideastern Region newsletter! Each month we will be featuring information to help our members stay informed, get involved, and advocate for our profession.

Our region represents the 15,168 public school educators across the 35 school districts and two intermediate units of Bucks and Montgomery Counties. Your hard work and the power of collective bargaining help to bring an exceptional education to the 195,426 students in our buildings.

Thank you to all of our members who made the journey to Pittsburgh on December 6-7 for the PSEA House of Delegates! Working with your EA and ESP Colleagues

In this interactive workshop, teachers and support staff will discuss the important relationship they share in their buildings. This workshop will challenge participants to talk about how their personal paradigms and attitudes impact their ability to work together. Participants will be asked to consider how their communication styles impact their work in the classroom. It will be on Tuesday, January 7th at 5pm at our region office in Montgomeryville. Registration is FREE and includes dinner!

QPR Suicide Prevention Training

QPR stands for Question, Persuade, and Refer -- three simple steps that anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide. Just as people trained in CPR and the Heimlich Maneuver help save thousands of lives each year, people trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade, and refer someone to help. Each year thousands of Americans are saying "yes" to saving the life of a friend, colleague, sibling, neighbor, or student. Please join us on February 4 for this 90-minute Act 48/Chapter 14 event presented by PSEA members Mike Fiore, Stephanie Warshaw, and Joe Werner, certified school social workers in our region. The event is FREE and includes dinner - click here to register.

Student Achievement and Poverty

This session examines socio-economic status and student achievement and takes a look at approaches and interventions that are being implemented to help "close the achievement gap" for students around the country. Participants will leave the session with a better understanding of the facts and helpful knowledge and resources related to poverty and student achievement.

The event will be facilitated by Dr. Chris Clayton, PSEA Assistant Director for Student Services, on Monday, February 10th at 5pm at our region office in Montgomeryville. Registration is FREE and includes dinner.

CB South Brew Crew

The CB South Brew Crew is a coffee shop run by hardworking students utilizing employable skills to build pride, culture and relationships. Mike McGlinchey of the San Francisco 49ers recently purchased a collection of Brew Crew merchandise for his teammates to support and rep on the road. Mike's younger brother is part of the CB South Brew Crew. Thanks to the awesome members who help to make this program possible!

CAPS Christmas Choir Competition

Congratulations to Indian Valley Middle School! Their school's choir, under the direction of Souderton EA member Diane Ramage, is the first place winner in the K-8 Division of B101 Philly's Christmas Choir Competition! For a big smile, take a look at the moment that they found out that they were the champions. They will receive $5,000 for their school's choir, have their song played on Philly's B101.1 throughout the holidays, and performed with The Philly POPS at The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts on December 11th! Kudos also to the Springfield Township Middle School choir, who won third place and will receive $1,000!

In the grades 9-12 contest, congratulations to Council Rock EA Member Corey Axler and the CR South Vocal Ensemble on their second place finish! They will be donating their prize to the Don Ketterer Fund which helps students with financial needs rent musical instruments.

PACE Awards

Congratulations to Pennsbury EA and Central Bucks EA for being recognized at the PSEA House of Delegates for their contributions to PACE! If you are interested in conducting a PACE drive in your local, please get in touch with Theresa Prato, our region PACE director (theresaprato@gmail.com).

School Employee Background Checks

Act 153 of 2014 requires school employees to provide or renew State Police/FBI record checks and child abuse clearance statements. Additional changes to the law went into effect July 1, 2015. PSEA wants to ensure that all members understand how this policy affects them. Updated clearances are required every 60 months from the date of the oldest clearance. If you obtained your clearances when this law went into effect, you are approaching the end of the 60 month term. Please reach out to your HR department or visit this link for additional information.

Read Aloud with Confidence

Be prepared to get up on your feet and learn how to be clear, engaging, and comfortable reading in front of an audience of your students and colleagues! Through a series of fun exercises and improvisation games you will learn to apply simple techniques used by voiceover artists and actors to hold audience attention and interest. Reading aloud to students both slows down and simultaneously intensifies the classroom experience. In a world of sound bites and half-formed ideas expressed quickly in electronic formats, students benefit from hearing complete ideas, expressed with originality and attention, such as one finds in literary language. This event will be presented by Emlyn McFarland, Actor/Voiceover Artist/Comedian, on Monday, March 9th at 5pm at our region office. Click here to register!
