Gladiator Greatness!
The boys basketball team (pictured right) advanced to the Region 5A Elite 8 after their 55-50 win over Eagle's Landing. Read about it in the Athens Banner-Herald.
The Black Culture Club hosted the annual Black History Month Program in Mell Auditorium on February 21st. Check out the Odyssey Media Group's extensive coverage on their website.
Clarke Central students and faculty hosted a panel discussion about Linnetown, a black neighborhood in Athens during the 1960s. Members of the Linnentown Project and former residents shared their experiences. Senior Isaac Ward was named to the 2019 Great American Rivalry Series Scholar Athlete All-American Team. Read about this honor on the organization's website.
Journalism 1 students attended a lecture by Georgia Supreme Court Justice Robert Benham on February 3rd at the UGA Chapel. Students' reflections on the experience can be read on the Odyssey Media Group's website.
Sophomore Isabel Heesacker-Romero won a gold medal in taekwondo at the Athletic Amateur Union Regional and is moving on to the national championship.
Gladiator basketball players Mikaylin Glover, Jaiquez Smith, Josh Smith, and Cameron Stokes were named to the 2020 All-Region 8AAAAA Basketball Team.
CCHS JROTC Drill Team and Color Guard continued their winning tradition after competitions last month. At the Gladiator Invitational on February 8th, the male team placed 3rd overall and the female team placed 4th. At the Elbert County Competition on February 15th, both the male/mixed team and the female team placed 2nd overall.
Central's Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl Team (pictured right) placed 3rd in the region championship on February 8th. Congratulations to Natalie Schliekelman, Ireland McCage, Anna DeMarco, Kai Woodey, and Erin Bothe.
Award-winning authors Kimberly Jones and Gilly Segal spoke to students on February 12th about writing and their book I'm Not Dying with You Tonight. Read about the event on the Odyssey Media Group's website.
Federal Reserve economist and member of the CCHS Class of 1996 Dr. Laura Ullrich spoke to senior economics students in Mell Auditorium on February 14th. Read about Dr. Ullrich and see pictures on the CCHS Facebook page.
CCHS FFA members competed in two Career Development Events in Banks County. The Poultry Judging team scored high amidst tough competition. The Nursery/Landscape team placed first! They will move on to compete at the state level. Congratulations to Eli Clarke, Lillie Schulz, Ietta Veeder and Raymond Pan.
Senior football players signed to continue playing in college at Central's Signing Day on February 5th. Student-athletes committing to colleges were O'Brien Barnett (Wingate University), Christian Bryan (University of Chicago), Jaylen Gary (Mars Hill College), Christopher Johnson (Wingate University), and Isaac Ward (Middle Tennessee State University). Members of Central's FFA chapter participated in the Nursery/Landscaping Career Development Event on February 27th in Banks County. Read more about this club and event in an article from Odyssey Media Group.
Ms. McNeeley's Multicultural Literature class organized two memorials in February. On February 2nd, the class recognized Holocaust Memorial Day by reading the names of child victims, displaying posters of facts around campus, and recording names of victims in both Hebrew and English on windows. During the week of February 17th, the class recognized African-American victims of lynching with an informational display and the inscription of names on the windows in Mell Lobby. Boys soccer coach Chris Aiken was presented with a $2,000 check from the Powerade Power Your School Grant Contest at the region championship basketball game last month. Coach Aiken and the team will use the funds to purchase equipment for the next season.
The Mock Trial Team excelled at Georgia Mock Trial Competitions in Jonesboro and Athens at the beginning of February. Avery Sepesi and Eva Orbock won Best Attorney, Brian Leahy and Samantha David won Best Witness, and Kurali Grantham won twice for Best Attorney.
Clarke Central High School was named an AP Honor School by the Georgia Department of Education. CCHS was recognized as an AP School of Distinction, an AP Humanities School, an AP Humanities Achievement School, an AP STEM School, and an AP STEM Achievement School.
