RES News
April 27, 2020
Hello Bobcat Families! Read below for a lot of information from Mrs. Strope!
School Closure
All of the staff members at RES are terribly saddened by the closure of school for the rest of the year. Although we understand the decision, we miss our Bobcats terribly. Please be in contact with your child's teacher, our school Social Worker, Jessica Chadwick (Jessica.chadwick@onslow.k12.nc.us), or me if you need anything during this time.
The State Board of Education has deemed the following regarding grading for the remainder of this school year:
Elementary and middle school students will not receive traditional grades for this year. Instead of final grades in elementary schools, teachers will provide year-end feedback for students regarding learning from the full academic school year.
Knowing that a "grade" will not be assigned for the year, it is important to realize that students and teachers don't get this time back. It is vital that students continue to engage in remote learning until the end of the school year. Teachers have prioritized content for the remainder of the year to include what is most important for success in the next grade level. Remote learning is difficult and we certainly don't want any backwards slide in student mastery of the curriculum. You may still see grades in Microsoft Teams (grades 3-5) but these grades are there for students and parents to use as feedback on the level of mastery of content standards.
The next round of instructional materials will be available on Monday, May 4. Paper packets will only be prepared for those who communicate with their teacher that one is needed. All grade level materials are available electronically. You may also drop off any completed work at that time.
Information will be coming regarding end-of-year logistics such as laptop return, pick up of student belongings, report cards/end-of year feedback, etc. It is my hope that all of our leaders at RES are continuing to be proactive and focused. I know they are finding ways to be leaders in their homes, neighborhoods, and community during this difficult and unprecedented time.
Keep learning, serving, and leading!

SGN - Some Good News
I have recently become enthralled with the SGN (Some Good News) videos by John Krasinski. I would like to highlight a SGN section of our school newsletter for the remainder of the year. If your student has some good news to share, please email me the details at laurie.strope@onslow.k12.nc.us with SGN as the subject! I look forward to hearing off the great things happening personally or academically with our students while they are learning at home.
Leader in Me News
RES was scheduled to have a Lighthouse Certification visit by Leader in Me Coaches on April 6. Being a Leader in Me Lighthouse School is the highest honor a Leader in Me School can attain. Although our in-person visit was canceled, we are fortunate that we have the opportunity to be visited virtually. The certifying team will be interviewing administration, and staff as well as a panel of students and parents. They will get a virtual tour of our campus and get to listen as a few students share their leadership binders. The virtual visit will take place on April 30th and we will know in 2-4 weeks if we have qualified as a Lighthouse School! This is an exciting time in our Leader in Me journey. Recognition like this can only be attributed to the leadership skills of the staff and students. One more reason I am proud to be a Bobcat!
LIM Survey:
Each year Leader in Me School parents, students, and staff take a survey to determine areas of needed growth in the areas of leadership, culture, and academics. Only 4th and 5th graders are asked to take the survey and their teachers have given them the link in their Teams assignments. All K-5 parents are asked to take the survey. Thank you in advance!
Staff Appreciation Week
May 4-8 is Staff Appreciation Week! Students and families are encouraged to reach out to staff members next week to show their appreciation in any way they see fit! I am super proud of the RES staff always, but especially during remote learning. Staff members will be invited to drive through the RES parking lot on May 7th to pick up some goodies from administration. If you have any cards, etc. for staff, you can drop them off on Monday, May 4 or Wednesday, May 6 from 9-2 and we will give them to staff on May 7th.
RES is collecting pop tabs for the Ronald McDonald House. Drop your tabs off at school when you can!
