The Hoot Owl

December 2021

NOTES FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Hope you had a great Thanksgiving break making memories with your family. As we move into December, we are going to begin opening up and allowing more visitors on campus as we have space. Lunches will remain by reservation only as we currently do not have excess space in our cafeteria. To make that reservation, you need to go to our homepage and click the "Lunch reservation" button.

Winter holidays will be here before you know which also brings an end to the first semester of school. Please know that your children are working hard every day at school from 8:00 - 3:10 learning and growing. We need your help with this by having them here daily, on time and staying until the end of the day. Students who are checked out early daily miss instruction. If you pick your child up 15 minutes a day, that learning loss equals close to 6 days of instruction they missed. That is a lot for our learners.

COUNTDOWN TO THE HOLIDAYS

Over the next few weeks, we are going to celebrate the upcoming winter break with theme dress up days. Students are invited to participate in any or all of the days listed below:

REFERRAL REQUESTS FOR GIFTED AND TALENTED TESTING

Referral requests are now open for Conroe Independent School District Gifted and Talented program. Although the testing will not take place until late January, referral requests are accepted at this time. Referral requests can be made by the parents and/or campus staff. It is recommended that parents of 2nd grade students wait until CogAT scores have arrived before nominating their child because CogAT scores are part of the GT assessment. If you are interested in referring your child, you may want to discuss this with your child’s teacher at conferences. Referrals will be accepted through December 17, 2021. You may request a referral form from Erin Anderson, Assistant Principal at eanderson@conroeisd.net. You can also find the referral form and other GT information on the CISD GT homepage.

NURSE'S NOTES

Dear Oak Ridge Families,

I wanted to take the time to let you know that I am retiring at the end of December. My husband received a wonderful opportunity back in July as a Cardiac Clinical Applications Specialist. We are and have been super excited about this opportunity. Our new home will be in Tulsa, Oklahoma. It has been my honor and privilege to serve the students, staff and community of CISD the last 21 service years with 31 years total experience as a pediatric nurse. I will miss you greatly but know that you are in good hands. My replacement has already been hired and I will get to spend a few days training her before I leave.

You are blessed to have such wonderful staff members here at Oak Ridge Elementary, salt of the earth. Please enjoy your families this holiday season and have a blessed New Year. You are forever in my heart.

LUNCH VISITORS:

A reservation button has been added to our campus home page. Please use that as we continue having a reservation system for lunch. Remember that we do have tables outside so if it is raining, we will cancel for that day and ask you to reschedule.

*Lunch

Here's what you need to know:

*Sign up using the reservation link below.

*Parents are restricted to only ONE day per cycle so that we can allow more parents to visit.

*No more than 2 people per child will be allowed based on space.

*Parents will need a valid ID and will enter the front of the building.

*Go straight to the cafeteria to meet your child and bring them to the patio tables.

*Lunch tables are on the patio by the playground. Unfortunately they are not covered so if it is raining, you will want to cancel and reschedule your day.

*When lunch is over, parents must leave. Parents cannot attend recess nor visit the child's classroom per Level 3 restrictions.

ATTENDANCE AND TARDIES

Our attendance has been hovering about 93% and our goal for the year is 96%. Unless your child is ill, it is important for them to be here at school, on time and stay all day long.

Tardies - We begin counting tardies at 8:01 a.m. We do, however, monitor the line. We take note of the last car in line at 8:01 and all cars after that, the students are counted tardy. Currently, we have a much shorter line between 7:45 - 7:55. If you consistently arrive about 7:55, try adjusting your morning schedule by about 10 minutes, you will not have to wait in line to drop off your child. Student drop off and pick up is the line closes to the building. Do not drop off or pick up on the other side the covered drive as it is unsafe for everyone involved.
