Conferring

Conferring is the hardest part of teaching writing, but is the most important part of teaching writing. Here are five words to get you started.

Listen to the writer talk about his or her writing, and then say, "One thing writers do is...

  • "One thing writers do is write words to match their pictures."
  • "One thing writers do is organize their writing using paragraphs."
  • "One thing writers do is write a thesis statement."

These five words make the teaching point clear, prevent the conference from turning into an editing session, and remind us to teach the writer, not the writing.

Remember, "If you can confer well, you can teach well!"
