You Can If You Think You Can!
Math Education in America
With all the emphasis on STEM subjects recently, the focus has turned to how a child's mathematical mind develops. Does nature or nurture play a more important role?
Researchers have done a lot of experiments to answer the above question. Parents' skills actually do have an effect on children says Dr Melissa E Libertus of the University of Pittsburgh. But their own self esteem is what matters more in the long run reads an article by the University of Washington on how children learn math.
The US ranked #27 out of 34 OECD countries as far as Math education goes. How do we improve our score? It's important to note that fostering a child’s enthusiasm for math must be done at home. One of the best ways to accomplish this is to introduce activities that require logical problem solving skills. Emphasize the importance of perseverance, a key “growth mindset” trait. By doing these things, you ensure that your child does not think of math as a scary subject, but rather, an interesting challenge. When you eliminate a child’s anxiety around math, you create an environment where anything is possible. To read the full article, click here.
Like anything else, math performance becomes better with practice. If you are looking to enhance your child(ren)'s math skills, take a look at our IQuest Singapore Math group classes (K-5) and private lesson offerings (Middle school and above) available to students ages 4-18. You can register for a free Singapore Math assessment here or contact us for private math lessons.
