National Library Week and Celebrating Paraprofessionals
Greetings Woodcrest families,
One of the things I’ve enjoyed the most recently are the conversations I get to have with students in the cafeteria. During breakfast time and lunch, your students have a lot of joy to share with their friends and others. On Monday, I listened in on a conversation between students discussing what school lunch would be preferred by their favorite Pokémon characters. I am not sure how they made the decisions they made, but it was a serious debate that ended with general agreement. I do not know a lot about Pokémon, but I now know that Charmeleon would prefer chicken nuggets over pizza.
There are only a few messages for me to share with you all today. We continue to refine our arrival and dismissal process. If you use the horseshoe parking lot in the morning or afternoon, please remember to pull as far forward as possible before saying goodbye or greeting your student. Pulling forward helps keep the traffic moving smoothly and ensures our process is as safe as possible.
This week is National Library Week and the month of April is “Library Month.” It is wonderful to see your children enjoying the books in our Learning Lab, and I also recommend taking the time to visit your local public library as well. Today, we recognize national paraprofessional appreciation day. We have a very strong paraprofessional team supporting students around the building in a variety of ways. I am honored to work with such an efficient and effective team. If there is a paraprofessional in your family’s life, it’s a great day to send them a note of gratitude.
Lastly, mark your calendar for April 15 as students will not have school that day. I hope you all find something fun to do, as I am hopeful the weather will improve by then.
Con gratitúd,
John Franke

Learner Profiles: Learning the learner
What does Maya know about herself at age six? She likes to eat tacos. She wants to be a ballerina. Her favorite color is blue. By the end of kindergarten as she’s turning seven? She might know that she doesn’t like working in groups. She prefers a wobble chair (to help with concentration). She’s interested in animals and (it’s likely) she still likes tacos.
A learner profile documents this kind of information – a student’s strengths, interests and needs as a learner as well as who they are as a person. It grows as they do during their time at Spring Lake Park Schools and supports them to become powerful, independent and curious learners.
In kindergarten, the profile primarily helps teachers to know a student and design engaging experiences for them. As they grow, students take more ownership. By graduation, the goal is for each student to know their strengths, interests and needs so well they can navigate anything.

About the show
In a Western territory just after the turn of the 20th century, a high-spirited rivalry between local farmers and cowboys provides a colorful background for Curly, a charming cowboy, and Laurey, a feisty farm girl, to play out their love story. Their romantic journey, as bumpy as a surrey ride down a country road, contrasts with the comic exploits of brazen Ado Annie and hapless Will Parker in a musical adventure embracing hope, determination and the promise of a new land.
"It's going to be a pretty phenomenal show - a unique and thought-provoking take on this old chestnut." - Kevin Dutcher, SLPHS theater director

- Saturday, April 23, 2 p.m.

Mileage Club
Are you ready to have fun outside with our students this spring? Come cheer them on, help them track their laps, and award prizes during recess during Mileage Club! LIttle siblings can also come help cheer! Sign-ups should be in Konstella this week. Tentatively M/W/F from April 18-May 27, based on the weather. Sign up for the Mileage Club Committee in Konstella to stay in the loop!
Each spring, WCSI PTO sponsors Mileage Club for all students. During recess, they may choose to run around a painted track outside to earn toe tokens (charms that look like feet) to wear on their provided lanyards.
