Get a jump-start on celebrating STEAM Month
Umpqua Valley STEAM Hub is observing all of May as STEAM Month, but we're starting early by highlighting two April 30 family-friendly events. One is Celebrate Children at Wildlife Safari in Winston, and the other is Healthy Kids Day at the YMCA of Douglas County in Roseburg. (Students from Area Health Education Center Southwest can be seen below preparing materials for a booth on health care and health care careers.) Go to the DCPSS calendar at www.dcpss.org/events for details. And check back to find other May events that promote STEAM learning!
A tale of two workers
Douglas County schools do their part to equip our young people for the future, but they are even more effective when industry partners make an effort to employ local students and grads. See how two local companies helped make a difference in the career paths of a Roseburg High senior and a Sutherlin High graduate.
Watch our website for CTE/STEAM Summer Camp schedules
Registration time is fast approaching for CTE/STEAM Summer Camps, taking place in Douglas County schools in June and July. The camps, for middle and high school students, are designed to offer experience that corresponds with CTE programs of study in local high schools and at Umpqua Community College. We'll publish a list of sites, activities and registration contacts as details become available. Keep checking www.dcpss.org for more information.
Why STEAM education is vital to youth
Scientists, technicians, engineers and mathematicians come in many varieties. And, like plants, they are best cultivated early, as observed by DCPSS Executive Director Gwen Soderberg-Chase in the April Perspectives column.
