Our School's Mission
Our School's Why
Dear LWSH Families and Caregivers,
Greetings LWSH Families, Caregivers, and Scholars,
What an honor and a privilege it was to become your new principal last year! As we move into a brand-new school year, I want to thank you for the support and dedication you showed last year. Despite the challenges coming back from a remote year with the pandemic still at play, we managed to build a culture that restored a love for learning and dedication to our commitment to success! Many of our scholars remained busy from the end of the last school year through the summer by participating in healthcare focused internships, CMSD's Summer Learning Experience, and job experiences both in and outside of the MetroHealth System! It's always great to know that our scholars seek engagement opportunities and self-guided pathways into their future post-secondary choices and careers!
Last school year had both its celebrations as well as its challenges. We experienced the evolutionary growth and accomplishment that not all academic metrics reflect. We increased our graduation 10% beyond our goal; we increased CFL measures in Adult Support, SEL, and Rigor; we placed 8 scholars in a STNA program that showed tremendous success, and landed one of our seniors a job at MetroHealth while attending CSU; we implemented PBL and collaborated with MH on real-world projects with students taking ownership of their learning and demonstrating their knowledge to public audiences; we grew our ELL scholars on OELPA by leaps and bounds; we had the top six highest parent conference rates in high schools across the district; we had three Heart Champion award winners; and we won a Z107.9 Pop-Up Party for “finishing strong” in attendance. All that being said, we need to keep that momentum, while we urgently address our academic achievement in math and reading this 22-23 school year.
With a great sense of urgency, we will be implementing new strategies to increase student achievement on State assessments for both Math and ELA. Using IXL and math talks, we will engage students in grade-level content through purposeful student conversations, while assigning specific lessons from IXL to target student gaps according to their needs. In ELA, we will be using a tool called Writable to increase student ability to respond to informational and literary text using specific teacher feedback to undergo continuous revisions until reaching a level of mastery. As we focus on these two strategies, we will be implementing our new PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention System) plan along with interventions to increase student attendance. We will be calling on our families throughout the year to attend literacy nights that will inform you of how you can support your child at home to further increase their ability to achieve. Along with that, you can also expect invitations to celebrations of learning and award ceremonies to acknowledge scholars who show growth and achievement.
Lastly, I am excited to announce that we will be onboarding the class of 2024 into our MetroHealth Campus to enrich their healthcare experience through job shadowing and internships. Because of our unique program and its location at the vibrant Metrohealth campus, we must be mindful of the safety of both the patients and caregivers. To ensure we are following the proper safety protocols, all staff and scholars must maintain the same status as MetroHealth personnel, volunteers, and contractors. Therefore, prior to the 22-23 school year, all 11th and 12th grade students must be fully vaccinated in order to continue to attend LWSH. We also ask that our 9th and 10th grade scholars be vaccinated as well so that they can participate in shadow days and engage in MetroHealth campus activities to receive on-site healthcare experiences.
It is imperative that all LWSH scholars complete this form with their guardians to ensure that you are able to attend. Prior to completing this form, please be sure you have available to you the following information to be uploaded. COVID vaccination cards and up-to-date vaccinations required for school, including influenza (flu shots) and Tuberculosis (TB) testing. These vaccinations and tests may be taken at your doctor's office or at your local drug stores like Walgreens and CVS. In addition to this, you will also need to complete the Observer Vaccination Packet for MetroHealth Hospital that is embedded in this newsletter and was sent home with scholars last school year. We look forward to all of our scholars getting real-world clinical experiences and opportunities through the MetroHealth system and the healthcare industry!
I am excited about what the new school year is going to bring and our continued partnership in making sure that ALL LWSH scholars achieve!
Sincerely,
Juliet King
