The Importance of Perseverance

By: Cassidy McGill

To me perseverance is the ability to go from one failure to the next with no loss of enthusiasm. To me this means that to persevere doesn't mean to win, it means to stay positive and confident. With these traits all adversities can be persevered through. Perseverance is not about how many times you fall, it's about how many times you get back up.

Jackie Robinson (description)

Jackie Robinson was an amazing baseball player, but there was one thing standing in his way of reaching his goal. His skin color. But that didn't stop Robinson. In his baseball career he overcame racial boundaries despite what people said or did. The end of his baseball career was not the end of his fight. He spoke out for equality even after he retired. Jackie Robinson was an inspiration on and off the field.

415 Strong (sequence)

The first step to overcoming the tragedy that happened on April 15, 2013 was forming a group of all the people who experienced the Boston Bombing. They met up to share recovery stories and advice. The next thing they did was start training for the race. They worked as a team to help each other. Then the 415 team jumped at the opportunity to run the marathon for free. Next they prepared for the race with more training sessions and help from a professional marathon runner. Lastly they ran the race with the support of each other and their family and friends in order to "take back the race."

Nepal Earthquake (cause and effect)

Nepal is a common place for earthquakes so people always wanted to be prepared. Since Nepal had suffered minor earthquakes before, some packed go bags all around their house along with a tent and blankets. The catalyst for an enormous change in Nepal started with a huge earthquake. The earthquake caused people to lose control of their vehicles. Things were collapsing and people were screaming. When the Earthquake was thought to be over some ventured out to help others who had been buried, some were setting up shelter with blankets and pillows. Everyone was helping each other. They were one family now. Then came the aftershocks. The after shocks freaked out everybody including animals. Dogs clung to their owners, even the crows were on edge. People then started to realize the damage the earthquake had caused. It ruined ancient plazas and fountains and shrines. But the people of Nepal knew they were lucky to be alive.

What can we learn from the perseverance of others in order to overcome adversity in today's world?

All of these people have taught very important things about perseverance. One thing that they all have in common is they are resilient and positive. In order to persevere it is important to look on the bright side and keep your goal in mind.
