Early Years

Tchaikovsky as born on May 7, 1840 in Votkinsk, Russia. His father, Ilya Petrovich, was an influential figure in their home city, as he was a magistrate, had a private army of 100 Cossacks, and had a large estate with many serfs working for him. Although his father was "famous" in Votkinsk, it was his mother, Alexandra, who brought music into his life. Piotr adored his mother, but she turned out to be a cold and distant woman, who only wanted to return to Moscow. When Tchaikovsky was 3, Alexandra hired a French governess, Fanny Dürback, to help with her children's education. When she saw how much time he was spending around music she decided that it was unhealthy! He wrote his first composition when he was only 4 years old!

Dance of the sugar plum fairy from the Nutcracker

The Nutcracker is usually associated with Christmas and winter time. It is an adaptation of Hoffman's tale "The Nutcracker and the King of Mice". In this wonderful piece of music, a new musical instrument is incorporated. The 'celeste' is "something between a piano and a glockenspiel with a heavenly tone". it premiered in 1892 and was a huge hit!
