Safety Drill
On Wednesday, December 8, the Chequamegon North Campus conducted an Intruder Drill with the help of the Ashland County Sheriff Department during the passing time between classes. We followed the protocols in an emergency situation from the I Love You Guys program. I Love You Guys took the place of ALICE because it was designed for schools and not businesses. In the case of a lockdown situation, staff and students are expected to lock their doors, turn off their lights, and get out of sight. The learning targets we shared with families, staff, and students are listed below.
Staff will know and be able to use communication tools to communicate the identity of an intruder to police and assist police in locating an intruder.
Staff know and be able to lead students into a safe lock down from a hall passing situation.
Students will know and be able to build and maintain a barricade and/or self-evacuate using tabletop methods.
Students will know how and be able to text updates to parents on a schedule when allowed.
Parents were sent information about the drill on November 30. I met with staff members after school on November 30 informing them of the specifics of the drill and expectations during the actual drill. Teachers shared a presentation with students about what to do in the case of an intruder and expectations during a lockdown on December 7. Sargent Nathaniel Delegan from Ashland County was extremely impressed they were with our communication during the drill and how staff and students handled the situation correctly. Sargent Delegan was able to check in with all Glidden Elementary classes to reassure them of the great job they did. After the drill, teachers, and students discussed and debriefed on the situation. Here were some items that were commented on and plans for improvements are being made:
- Students should not sit in desks - this makes it too difficult to move and be agile if necessary.
- Covering windows makes many rooms too dark to navigate safely or call from a landline phone so locks, lights, out of sight is the main goal.
- Staff phone lines should be moved to a location out of sight from the door or have a longer cord in order to move the landline to a place out of view of the door.
