Honouring the Children of the Kamloops residential school - June 8
Tansi OLA Families,
The recent news of the discovery of a mass grave at the site of the Kamloops residential school has filled our hearts with such grief and sadness. In support of our Indigenous Peoples and communities, EICS will be remembering and honouring these little children this coming Tuesday, June 8th. Here at OLA, our day will include opportunities for class and school wide expressions of learning, understanding, love and support for these children, their families, and all of Canada’s Indigenous People.
In honour of the children, all of our EICS schools will continue to keep our flags lowered until after this day. In addition, the district is encouraging everyone to wear their orange shirts as a reminder of the importance of continuing to come together in solidarity. At 2:00 p.m. we will connect together district wide in unity to view a brief recorded message from EICS’ Central Learning Services followed by a moment of silence in honour of the children of the Kamloops residential school.
In addition, OLA teachers are preparing to revisit the conversation of residential schools with their students and create a safe place for each of them to ask questions, respond, and share their stories. Our staff are ready to have these conversations with the children and we would like to invite you to also be a part of this conversation with your child. Remember that our youngest children do not need to know all of the details. The conversation is about building an awareness and empathy towards the Indigenous families who were broken apart and the children who were lost. If you would like some support with this, please do not hesitate to reach out to us by calling 780-998-3716, emailing your child's teacher, or speaking directly with Mrs. Heesing (eleanor.heesing@eics.ab.ca) or Mrs. Weller (sandyw@eics.ab.ca).
OLA will the respond to these conversations by creating a Heart Garden on our east facing fence along Sherridon Drive. We will be decorating and writing messages for each of the 215 Kamloops residential school Indigenous children and each class will close out the “planting” of this garden with prayer.
May the Lord lead us to walking forward together in trust.
