Newsletter Term 3 Week 7
St Patrick's School Masterton 6th September 2022
TUMUAKI/PRINCIPAL MESSAGE
Tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou katoa, nga mihi nui ki a koutou katoa!
This week at school we are celebrating ‘Kindness Week’ alongside CARITAS’s ‘Say no to racism’ week. Kindness is one of our three school values and a key component of our Brigidine motto ‘Strength & Kindness’. Throughout the week, children will be taking part in a range of class and syndicate activities on this theme. At school we define Kindness to mean ‘being caring and thoughtful towards the needs of myself, others and creation’
A reminder that tomorrow Wednesday, 7th September, we are holding student-led conferences for all children. These will be from 1.30 – 5.30pm meaning that the normal school programme will not be running that afternoon. If you are able we would like you to please pick your children up from school at 1pm, for those of you that are not able to do this there will be supervision until the normal finishing time of 3.00pm.
To book a conference please go to the school interviews website and enter the code yzzv2 . From here you will be able to choose a time that suits your whānau. We would like to ask that every family supports their child by booking and attending.
This Saturday, everyone has the opportunity to support a fantastic community event organised by our very own Year 6 student Conor. Working with Masterton District Council he has organised a ‘spring clean’ to help tidy up our town. This is a great effort and shows how Conor is really living our values of strength & kindness.
Looking ahead to term 4, I wanted to let you know about some exciting new building renovations that we have taking place. The image below shows the planned upgrades to classrooms 1-6 otherwise known as Hubs 2, 3 & 4. This will involve new carpets and wall furnishings as well as glass sliding doors installed in between classrooms. This will cause some disruption for the children with each hub being relocated to the hall for a few weeks at a time. We will do everything we can to minimise this disruption and ensure learning programmes can continue.
Listed below are key events that are currently planned for term 3:
September 7th - Student Led Conferences (from 1.30pm)
September 5th to 9th - Kindness/ No to Racism week
September 12th - 15th - Te Reo Māori Language week
September 21st - BOT meeting @ 7pm
Week of 26th September - Kapa Haka Festival (date TBC)
September 30th - Final day of Term 3
Ngā mihi o Te Atua,

Gospel of the Week
Luke 14:25-33
The Cost of Being a Disciple
25 Once when large crowds of people were going along with Jesus, he turned and said to them, 26 “Those who come to me cannot be my disciples unless they love me more than they love father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, and themselves as well. 27 Those who do not carry their own cross and come after me cannot be my disciples. 28 If one of you is planning to build a tower, you sit down first and figure out what it will cost, to see if you have enough money to finish the job. 29 If you don't, you will not be able to finish the tower after laying the foundation; and all who see what happened will make fun of you. 30 ‘You began to build but can't finish the job!’ they will say. 31 If a king goes out with ten thousand men to fight another king who comes against him with twenty thousand men, he will sit down first and decide if he is strong enough to face that other king. 32 If he isn't, he will send messengers to meet the other king to ask for terms of peace while he is still a long way off. 33 In the same way,” concluded Jesus, “none of you can be my disciple unless you give up everything you have.

- Further detail for parents/ caregivers - We are one human family. Our responsibilities to each other transcend national, racial, economic and ideological differences. Divine River Workshop 21st September
All year 5 & 6 girls are invited to the Divine River workshop on the 21st of September during school time.
This is a one-hour introductory workshop that explores reusable vs disposable and the reasons tamariki could consider choosing a sustainable approach to period care.
These workshops complement PE and health curriculums and align with the Hauora model. The workshop is delivered face to face in class, as the hands-on interactive learning experience develops a stronger connection for the tamariki with the subject.
The workshop will be delivered by the Divine River project team of Lisa Birrell and Joanne Heir. Lisa and Jo have recently run successful workshops at schools including Makoura College, Carterton School and South End School.
If you want more information, look on the Divine River facebook page.
If you don’t wish your daughter to attend please contact your daughters hub teachers.
