Welcome back to school - tips to support your child's reading!
Read your favorite books again
Rereading is absolutely the most powerful tool that will help readers develop greater stamina, deeper concentration, and abundant joy! Rereading some old favorites can build confidence, fluency, and independence.
Give your child choice over their reading
Reading at home reinforces all the skills students are learning at school, but one of the most important things kids can develop through at home reading is the love of reading - of being able to see themselves as someone who is a reader. One way to help build that love of reading is by allowing kids to choose and read what they like - both in the subject but also in the format. Kids might love fantasy novels, or humorous graphic novels, or beautiful magazines, or interesting nonfiction, or even amazing audiobooks!
Get back in the routine.
Parents can set expectations for how children should be spending their time and tasks that should be accomplished. Getting back to a schedule with school and after school activities and homework can be a challenge. Creating a list of tasks to complete is a good way to make time for all the things that need to be done as well as things kids want to do. It helps to set the priorities. Planning in reading as part of a regular routine makes it easy and fun to complete!
Save the Date - Murray Park and Quest Book Fair
Our Fall book fair will take place from October 21st to October 25th. The book fair is a great way to tap into your child's choice and motivation to read. New information regarding the book fair includes a new state law which requires us to collect sales tax on book fair sales. Please be aware of this if you send money with your child to shop during the day.
More exciting news for the book fair is the online shopping options for families this year. Please watch for these details to come!
