House System
SHERWOOD ELEMENTARY
What is a House System?
The house system is an idea adopted from the Ron Clark Academy to give students the opportunity to connect with students across classes and grade levels. The goal behind this initiative is to UNITE students and encourage teamwork, kindness, respect, life skills, and celebrating others! This philosophy mirrors that of sports teams all across the world, focusing on the life skills of commitment, hard work, being a team player, and demonstrating positive sportsmanship towards ALL teams. Students are randomly placed into one of four houses that they will they will remain a part of throughout their time at our school. FOUR Houses, ONE Sherwood!
SHERWOOD'S FOUR HOUSES
Altruismo
ALTRUISMO (Brazil)
“The house of givers, generosity, and wisdom”
COLOR: BLACK
SYMBOLS: GRIFFIN, DIAMOND, SHIELD
HAND SYMBOL: SNAKE
This special group is known for striking a balance between bold strength and altruistic giving — a team that knows that real power comes not from looking out for yourself but from empowering others. They care deeply about lifting others up, but they also maintain a fiercely competitive spirit and pride. Altruismo traces its origins to the rainforests of the Amazon, where a group of powerful Brazilians were given the name because of the Portuguese meaning behind it: “the Givers.”
Amistad
AMISTAD (Mexico)
“The house of friendship, kindness, and protection “
COLOR: RED
SYMBOLS: PEACOCK & KNIGHT
HAND SYMBOLS: HEART & CROSSED ARMS (KEY)
Amistad is the House that originates from Mexico. A group of kind but powerful individuals that are known most for their unconquered spirit. They are fierce warriors, protectors, and guardians of the most sacred treasure of friendship. This is why, in the language of their ancestry, their name means “friendship.”
Isibindi
ISIBINDI (South Africa)
“The house of unwavering courage, strength, and dedication to family”
COLOR: GREEN
SYMBOLS: SWAN, LION, & EBONY TREE
HAND SYMBOL: "WHO YOU WITH" SIGN
Isibindi is a tight-knit group of individuals, like a pride of African lions, where family means everything. The House’s symbolic animals, the mute swan and the lion, serve to empower incoming members. While new students might be quiet or shy at first, the longer that they are in the House, the more they begin to display the characteristics of strength and bravery. In Zulu, Isibindi means “courage.”
Reveur
REVEUR (France)
“The house of dreaming, determination, and confidence”
COLOR: BLUE
SYMBOLS: UNICORN & WOLF
HAND SYMBOL: CRESCENT MOONS
