Science: Our Heads are in the Clouds
This week in science we've been looking for evidence that air is matter--that it is something real. This afternoon, we experimented heavily with air resistance using parachutes. What a fun time this was!
This is a great springboard for our study of clouds. We are identifying, observing, and recording the clouds we see each day. We are learning to make connections between these types of observations and the resulting weather. Ask your child what (s)he knows about cirrus, stratus, cumulus, and cumulonimbus clouds. This study helps us to address the following Indiana Academic Science Standard:
- "Record detailed weather observations, including cloud cover, cloud type, and type of precipitation on a daily basis and correlate observations to the time of year. Chart and graph collected data."
Math: Number Sense
In math we are continuing to hone our number sense by working in engaging "group time" learning centers. Students are comparing three-digit numbers based on meanings of the hundreds, tens, and ones digits, using >, =, and < symbols to record the results of comparisons. Essential vocabulary and symbols for this standard include: greater than, less than, equal, <, >, and =. Click here to visit the online dictionary for vocabulary that supports the math we are learning.
Attendance
September is the first full month of school for most schools, and for that reason it’s also Attendance Awareness Month. Throughout the month, we here at Liberty Elementary School wish to remind parents and mentors how important student attendance is for their achievement.
Did you know that a student who misses just two or more days of school a month is considered to be chronically absent? This is directly linked to poor academic performance. According to recent research, nearly half of parents believe that it is okay for their children to miss three or more days of school per month – and that they won’t fall behind academically if they do. In reality, "missing just two days of school per month makes children more likely to fall behind and less likely to graduate,” said the U.S. Department of Education in a recent post.
You've probably heard your child repeat what we always say in our classroom: "Miss a day; miss A LOT!" As you've noticed already, I am committed to providing meaningful learning experiences every day. Therefore, a student who is absent is missing a significant component of the teaching and learning. It is also important for you to know that daily participation is incorporated as part of the teaching/learning process during each grading period.
Bottom line: Please make sure your child is here on time and stays all day...unless of course (s)he is ill.
Next Week's Share Topic:
My Grandparents: Sunday, September 8th is Grandparents’ Day. Who are your grandparents? Do they live nearby? If you see them often, what kinds of things to you like to do with them? Feel free to share pictures or drawings of them with us. If there are no grandparents in your life, how about sharing about an older special someone?
