August: You're the Driver!
September: We make our Positive Vision a Reality Together
Red Light, Yellow Light, Green Light
Grade Level: K-12
Materials Needed:
• Posters
• Markers and Crayons
Objective:
To help students become aware of their emotions and to learn how to control them and
make better decisions rather than acting impulsively.
Suggestions:
• While the red light, green light analogy may make this lesson seem like it is more
suited for younger children, people of all ages including adults can benefit from
this.
• This lesson is based on the PATHS program.
www.pomounties.org/~paths/index.html
Visit this link for more information on
PATHS and additional PATHS lessons.
This lesson makes a great program for the entire school.
Procedure:
1. Discuss different kinds of emotions. Anger, frustration, jealousy, love, compassion,
joy.
2. Discuss with students how emotions can make us act impulsively. For example when
an other student teases you it may make you want to say something mean back or
perhaps even hit them. Or when you are under a lot of stress you may get angry and
frustrated. Or perhaps when someone is recognized for their talents you may get
jealous.
3. Teach students the Red Light, Yellow Light, Green Light Technique. Teach the
following.
• When you find that you are experiencing a negative emotion think red light and
stop. Focus on your breathing. Take a few deep breaths in and out. Get calm.
• Then think yellow light. During yellow light think about how you can approach a
problem or situation differently rather than getting angry and saying something
mean or doing something hurtful. Think about other alternatives available to
you. For instance instead of yelling at your mom because she won’t let you to
your friends house you may decide to write her a letter and explain why you
should be allowed to go.
Then think green light. During green light it’s time to take action on your
alternative action. So in the previous example you would go write your mom a
letter. Or you might explain to her calmly why you should be able to go.
4. Have students pair up. Give students several examples of situations that might
cause them to act emotionally and impulsively. Have them role play and practice the
red light, yellow light, green light technique.
5. Using paper, markers and crayons have students make red light, yellow light and
green light signs in the classroom and around the school if this becomes a schoolwide
program. These provide great reminders for students.
6. Each week set aside class time for students to share success stories and discuss
ways they used red light, yellow light and green light successfully.
