Positivity Project - Prudence
This week our character strength is Prudence!
Prudence is the ability to do the right thing, at the right time, for the right reason. It's a future-oriented way of thinking that helps a person set goals, make plans, and have the discipline to accomplish them. It is cognitive – more a strength of the head than of the heart.
The parent virtue for Prudence is Temperance. Strengths of temperance protect us from excess. Strengths comprised in this virtue are forgiveness, humility/modesty, prudence, and self-control.
Use the quotes and videos below to host discussion with your child.
"A dream doesn't become reality through magic; it takes sweat, determination, and hard work." ~ Colin Powell
"Nothing can be done quickly and prudently at the same time." ~Publius Syrus
Are your biggest dreams possible to achieve?
NC Check-Ins!
NC Check-Ins are interim assessments developed by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) that are aligned to North Carolina grade-level content standards (for reading and mathematics) and North Carolina Essential Standards (for science).
The main purpose of NC Check-Ins is to provide students, teachers, and parents, with immediate in-depth action data and a reliable estimate of students’ current performance on the selected subset of content standards. Both the end-of-grade (EOG) tests and the end-of course (EOC) tests share a common item bank with the NC Check-Ins, which then exposes NC Check-In students to similar item types and rigor found on the EOGs and EOCs.
The NC Check-In administration dates are as follows:
Administration Windows
NC Check-In 2
Jan 28 4th & 5th Math
Jan 30 - 3rd Math & 5th Science
Make Up days will be scheduled as needed.
NC Check-In 3
March-April *More specific dates available soon.
If you have questions or concerns about the NC Check-Ins, please contact your child’s teacher.
Book Fair!
The Buckhorn Creek Elementary PTA is putting on our 2nd annual Book Fair. This is a great opportunity for students to supplement their home libraries with great books while raising funds for free books for their classrooms and the school library.
We can't do it without your help. We need volunteers to help set up the Book Fair on Friday (1/31) afternoon/evening, help the students make book wish lists and purchases throughout the week (2/3 - 2/7), help with Family Night on Tues (2/4), help with Grandparents Day on Thurs (2/6), and help tear down the Book Fair on Fri (2/5) afternoon.
Just an hour of help (or more!) would be greatly appreciated. Please review the available slots below and click on the button to sign up. Thank you and happy reading!

Coffee with the Principal
Part of the data indicated a need to have more face to face opportunities to speak with school administration. Thus, we are going to begin hosting monthly opportunities.
During each meeting we will begin by share information about a relevant topic and then host an open forum dialogue.
We will host our first meeting on January 14th from 9-9:30 a.m in the Media Center. We will discuss how to create a parent account for DreamBox and how to use this to understand your child's academic progress.
We look forward to meeting with you!
