Dear Wamsley Wildcat Families!
As October arrives, fall is finally in the air and we are enjoying the cooler weather and moisture. Please send your children prepared for cool mornings outside and warm days. Also, please make sure to label your child’s clothing with their first and last name. This helps find lost articles quickly.
Experiential Education or “EE” is off to an AMAZING start! Your students have been hiking, studying animal habitats, cooking bagels and dehydrating fruit. It’s also finally time for some field trips! Kindergarten and first grades are headed to a pumpkin patch while the rest of the grades will be going on some longer hiking excursions. With all these experiences happening at school, we are expecting that your children learn a skill or concept when they are completing the experience. Please ask them what they “learned” from their experiences in “EE” during the week.
Effort = Achievement! This is again a major focus for us here at Wamsley! We have progressed from Why Try lessons to WE TRY lessons every week. Recently, your students took the iReady beginning of year assessment which helps us know what to focus on in math and reading. Students that showed effort or achievement on the assessment earned a reward. The reward this time was “scootering” to the Rocket Park. We have enough scooters and helmets left from summer school for an entire grade to scooter all at once. Ask your student if they participated in this fun reward and look around town because you may see some wildcats scootering to the store to buy supplies for EE or scootering to other places for some learning time. :)
Thank you for your patience with our transition to masks again this year! Your children are doing a great job with this new expectation. Please remember that our top priority in Garfield RE2 is keeping our students and staff safe; our mission is to keep kids in-person with uninterrupted learning with their teachers.
By wearing masks in school, it helps to eliminate quarantines and:
We keep kids in school learning with their teachers because we rarely have to quarantine in homeroom settings when a positive Covid case arises;
We keep teachers teaching in school and not online because our students can participate in uninterrupted, in-person learning with their teachers;
We keep parents working to support their families because our parents do not have to choose between child care and work because their child is in a quarantine;
We support local businesses during an already tight employee market;
We keep our schools open.
Thank you for sharing your children with us and for all you do to help make our school a great place! Please check the Sunday weekly email for important information and details about all our upcoming events! As always, call or stop in and let us know how we are doing.

Preschool Preschool has gotten off to a great start. We are starting to settle into our classroom routines with our new school friends. Our 1/2 day friends are continuing to work on Dinosaurs and will be moving over to emotions and feelings within the next few weeks. While our full day friends are finishing up their emotions unit and will be transitioning into a fall theme. | Kindergarten We have been having a lot of fun here in kindergarten! We have been learning about the life cycle of plants and butterflies in science and have gotten to plant seeds and have our very own caterpillars in our classroom! In math, we have been learning about counting to 20, drawing up to 10 objects, using ten-frames, and writing numbers. In reading, we have been learning about the letter “Aa” and will be learning about “Dd” next. We have also been working on recognizing letters and letter sounds and knowing the first sound in words. In writing, we have been using letter sounds to stretch out words and drawing a picture to go with it. Please continue working on letters/letter sounds and counting to 30 at home! | First GradeFirst graders learned about the life cycle of a pumpkin last week. Students also dissected pumpkins and used their 5 senses to discuss what they observed about the different parts. We will travel to Studts Pumpkin Patch on Thursday, October 7th to experience some fun at a pumpkin patch and corn maze! |

Second Grade Wamsley 2nd graders are working SO hard! In Writing the students are working on a Narrative that shares a true story about them. Students are challenged to write in sequence form by including a beginning, middle, and end in their stories. In Math, students are identifying coins and counting money, adding number strings, telling time to the five minutes, working with place value, and solving story problems. In Science, students are learning how to be habitat scientists. They are investigating why certain trees are not growing in the Bengal Tiger Reserve in India. In EE, the second graders are explaining basic 2D shapes by exploring geometry in nature. We are excited to experience new learning opportunities this month! ( : | Third Grade What a great month here in third grade! In writing, we have been working on writing narrative stories and adding dialogue into our writing. In math, we have been working on adding and subtracting three digit numbers. In science, we have been working on magnetic forces. We also started talking about electromagnetic forces. Students have been able to use materials to try and make a paperclip "float". | Fourth GradeThis month fourth graders have been working hard! In Writing, students have been practicing writing biographies and opinion pieces. In Science, we just wrapped up our unit on the study of fossils and are diving into the science of light and sound. In Math, we have done a great job learning new skills. We are wrapping up this unit and your students have learned how to round to the ten-thousandths place, add and subtract to the millions, solve multi-step word problems and they can identify greater than and less than equations. I'm so proud of the hard work they show every single day. Students have been working hard in reading to reach their middle of the year goals. One way you can support them in doing this is by reading with your child or encouraging them to read for 20 minutes each night. Thank you for your continued support! We are looking forward to another month of learning and growing. -Mr. Rowe and Ms. Ferraro |

Fifth Grade We have many exciting activities planned for 5th grade this month. Students just started their new ELA unit. We are learning about informative writing. In science, students are wrapping up the ecosystem and restoration unit. The next unit will be about matter and mixtures. In social studies, students are learning about early exploration and the impact it had on the World. The next unit will be about colonization, just in time for Thanksgiving. In math, students have been learning about word problems and multiplication. For their next unit, students will begin practicing division strategies. Encourage your student to practice their multiplication facts and read. Practicing both of these skills will lead to an increase in math and reading fluency. We are excited to continue watching your students learn and grow. | Experiential Education This month in EE has been filled with hands-on, outdoor learning experiences, such as hikes, exploring the environment around us, Autumn activities, and cooking! We can't wait to feel the seasons change, and get our hands dirty as we put the garden to bed for the year. Ask your child what they did in EE this week and look out for information on upcoming field trips! | Parent Teacher Action Committee (PTAC)PTAC will be sponsoring the Scholastic Book Fair during the week of October 18th. Look for more information to come home about when your child can shop, or you can shop with your child during Parent Teacher conferences on the 19th & 20th. All proceeds will go towards free books for our school! Also, you can sign up to help the PTAC feed our teachers during conferences. Look for more information to come home! PTAC will soon be sending home Butter Braid order sheets for your children to sell to friends and family.
