OUR STORY - Shout Outs!
WCS Weekly Highlights - March 18-22, 2019
Remembering Two Members of our WCS Family
As many of you are aware, we had two members of our WCS Family pass away this week - Winstead ES Exceptional Children's Teacher Beryl Perry on March 20 and Hunt HS Senior Layla Overby on March 16. They will both be greatly missed by everyone who knew them. Please keep their immediate family, friends and school families in your thoughts and prayers. The arrangements for Ms. Perry are still being decided. The arrangements for Layla are being handled by Joyner's Funeral Home.
Kind of a Big Deal
Zaimierh, a fifth-grader at Jones ES, recently received a special treat from Superintendent Dr. Mills. During Read Across America Week, Dr. Mills read a book in Zaimierh's classroom. Dr. Mills likes to show the students how fast he can read the book, and he was impressed by Zaimierh’s courage and fearlessness to try and beat his speed reading record!
Stellar Student
Siani, an Elm City MS eighth-grader, was recognized by the Board of Education on March 18 for her work ethic and desire to learn. She was a participant in the Optimist Club Essay contest, created an amazing project for Black History Month, is a part of the Battle of the Books Team and looks for every opportunity to grow academically. She hopes to attend MIT in the future.

There's an App
WCS launched a mobile app on March 18 that can be download on mobile devices for free. Through the app, you can find the latest district and school news and receive push notifications about events and inclement weather closures. You can also find menus, calendars and resources all in one place. To download the app on your device, visit the iTunes App Store or Google Play Store and search for Wilson County Schools – NC (look for our graduation hat logo). Next, select the app and download. Enable push notifications in your settings so you don’t miss messages from the district or your child’s school.

Career Health Connections Partners
On March 18, the Board of Education recognized the community partners and WCS staff who have made an amazing opportunity possible for our high school students. Through the creation of the Career Connections Program, seven students are spending eight weeks job shadowing health care professionals at Carolina Family Health Centers and Wilson Medical Center. The students all have an interest in the medical field. This program would not have been possible without the Wilson Education Partnership (represented by Robin Williams), Area L AHEC (represented by Debby Futrell), Wilson Medical Center (represented by Preston Callison), Carolina Family Health Centers (represented by Laura Owens) and WCS staff members - David Lyndon, Michelle Graybeal, Jean Hall and Kelly Lindsey.
