Career Overview

Elementary School teachers work in public and private schools. They instruct children in grades 1-6. Teachers teach children social skills. They make lesson plans for each day and use other resources to improve the children's knowledge.

Elementary Teachers use computers, videos, hands-on learning, visual aids and handouts. They teach subjects such as writing, reading history, math, English and counting.

Career Skills and Interests

Some skills needed are the ability to to express ideas clearly, understand new information, motivate and direct others and identify patterns.

In this career, you need to be able to think of unusual, creative and original ways to solve problems. Also look for ways to help people and solve problems by bringing others together and go back and forth between many ideas without getting confused.

Career Working Conditions

Teachers work very close with others and are very social. They are constantly working with students, parents and other teachers. They are in contact with these people face-to-face and by phone, email and letters. The work done must be accurate and understood by everyone. Your decisions affect the lives of your students and their families. In the work place, you are exposed to loud noises.

They work 9 months out of the year. Some work summers. Hours are usually 7:30 to 3:30 but many extra hours are also put in.

Career Wages and Outlook

The outlook for teachers is very large in Minnesota and throughout the United States. Teachers get salary pay.

Teachers usually get benefits such as health and life insurance. Also a retirement plan and sick leave. Teachers usually belong to unions.

Summary

The workplace that I visited was very inviting. It was a place that I would want to work at! At the interview, I learned more about the specifics and everyday duties for this occupation. I liked that the interview was open and seemed like a great place to work. I also liked that you can be creative in this career. Some advice I received from the interview was to be patient in this career! There is no other occupations that I have found that interest me more than this. I am very interested in teaching. I think I would be very happy in this occupation!
