A Note from our PFC Co-Presidents

Aloha,

This most interesting of school years remains...well...interesting. As the possibility of schools re-opening continues to gain steam, it is also becoming more of a topic of discussion every day. We all want schools to reopen, but we also know that doing so isn’t as simple as just unlocking the classroom doors. For many, patience is wearing thin, and it can be easy to take out one’s frustration at another over the current situation.

Because of that, we ask that everyone be kind and patient with each other, and focus on what you really can impact: your children’s well-being. One way to do that is to talk with and listen to your kids. It may sound obvious, but sometimes the most obvious actions can have the most positive effects.

And something positive that is coming up is the annual Thornhill Read-A-Thon! Ms. Fox, our incredible librarian, is spearheading this effort and it will be a great opportunity for our children to share a school-wide activity, even though they are not physically at school.

As a reminder: This newsletter, the Thornhill website, and Konstella are the official channels of communication for the PFC and school administration and will have the most current news and updates. Anything shared by members of the community on other platforms may be relevant to Thornhill families, but are not official school communications.

We wish you well, and...

Mahalo!

Rex Crum and Alicia Streight

Mandatory OUSD Student Preference Form/Survey

From our OUSD Superintendent:

Our ability to bring students back to campus for in-person learning is dependent on several factors, including COVID cases continuing to decline. It also depends on how many of our staff and students would like to return for in-person learning and how many wish to remain in distance learning.

At this time, we are asking all TK-5 families to answer two questions in the Mandatory Student Preference Form for each of their TK-5 students by Tuesday, March 2, 2021. This will let us know if you prefer that your student continues with distance learning for the rest of the school year, OR if you prefer your student return to in-person learning, if it becomes available. Please visit www.ousd.org/reopening2021/form for more information and resources to help inform your decision.

This form is required for current TK-5 students. Families with students in Pre-K and grades 6-12 will be contacted later.

In Community,
Kyla Johnson-Trammell
Superintendent

(Note that if you have more than one child in grades TK-5, that you'll need to submit a separate entry for each child.)

California Healthy Kids Parent Survey (CHKS)

Please complete the CHKS 2021 Parent Survey! This survey is an opportunity for you to help Thornhill by sharing your opinions about it. We want to learn about this school’s efforts to promote academic success and well-being for every student. We also want to know how well the school is supporting you to be a true partner in your child’s education. If you have more than one child at this school, you may either fill out a separate survey for each child or just focus on the experience of one of your children at Thornhill.

Thank you,

Sherry Kaetzel, Thornhill Secretary

About the Thornhill Newsletter

The Thornhill Parent-Faculty Club (PFC) eNews team publishes this weekly newsletter each Tuesday in the school year to communicate school, PFC and OUSD news, events and information.

Email submissions to our Newsletter Chair, Jill Evans, at newsletter@thornhillschool.org by 8 p.m. Thursday for approval—nothing sent after this will be included in the following week’s newsletter unless there are extremely compelling extenuating circumstances. It’s fine to include text in the body of the email with links and no formatting, and attach photos preferably as 150 x 150, 72 dpi JPG or GIFs only (not embedded in email or Word file). Submissions may be edited for spelling, grammar, brevity and clarity. Advertising and items not related to Thornhill are not accepted, as we need to keep the newsletter focused on need-to-know info for the community.

THANK YOU to everyone who submits articles and to PFC Board Members, Teachers, VPs of Communications Erin Proudfoot & Evie Nagy, PFC Presidents Rex Crum & Alicia Streight, and Principal Steve Daubenspeck. Member of Oakland Unified School District (OUSD).
